The trip to Gougane Barra is as fantastic as the nature itself. The park is so clean and, aside from the also extremely clean bathroom present at the entrance to the park, it feels completely untouched. There are many paths ranging from easy to hard for people of all abilities to access.

We traveled to Gougane Barra as part of a Catholic pilgrimage group. It may be my favorite religious site we visited in all of Ireland. The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is believed to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6th century. The chapel is beautiful and perfectly kept up.... A magical park. Well worth the drive to get there. My recommendation is to climb! It's too easy to simply pay the 5 euros to drive around the forest track and then drive back out again. Don't do that. Park up. Either take the Slí Sleibhe route (the red dots) and climb up alongside the tiny River Lee (as we... More

go ideally on a sunny day in the autumn - colours of the trees and less people around make it a very enjoyable experience

I certainly recommend a visit to this amazing park. As we wer pushed for time we choose to drive around the park. A car is only 5 euro which is great value. It is well set out with lots of walking trails, streams and picnic areas. A lot of trees had been felled or damaged which I understand is from... More

A very sheltered valley where the River Lee begins. Lovely for walking, hill walking, picnic and just communing with nature.

Gougane Barra Park is a peaceful enclave of tamed wilderness in one of the most beautiful regions in Ireland. Paths are inviting and cleared. Sheep are occasionally encountered. It has a magical light with the sun filtering through the trees overhead or the silver of the often-present clouds gently diffusing the sun's rays. Entrance fees for vehicles or you can... More
