I went with 2 other photographers from Kilkenny. I had never visited previously although I had seen photos of the chapel & lake. Once into the park it gets better. We climbed the waterfall walk and the mountain trail. It almost seems man made with streams meandering throughout the woods and ancient moss-covered walls. The waterfall was great and it... More

We actually visited the historic early Christian church at Gougane Barra (associated with St. Finbarr, the first bishop of Cork) rather than the forest park itself, but the whole locality is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Now this place is a sight to delight. I won't go into the history of the place except to say that it stretches back into ancient island. There is a tiny church on the edge of the lake. A very old one but kept in prefect condition. In fact it is used for weddings very frequently. The vista is just... More

I am speechless but of course in a positive way. This place has something magic! There is a special atmosphere! I can't describe it! I have never been in a place like this! It's a little bit far from Cork City but it really worth a visit!!!!

This charming lakeland valley was a monastic site for many centuries and is still a site for pilgrimage with it's holy well, ancient graveyard and small chapel/ oratory of St Finbarr. The park walk is specially beautiful. The lake is the source of the River Lee which flows through South Cork and enters the sea at Cork City.

This is a jewel of a place that you must visit when staying in Macroom. There is a lovely forest walk, and the little St.Finbarr's Oratory (a little church) has a lot of history attached to it. Autumn time is lovely and full of colour. Great selection of Ferns grow there too. A great place for photo opportunities.

We looved Gougane Barra Park. It was one of the highlights of our visit. It is jam - packed with Irish culture and Irish history. The cute little church just makes the park. It has fantastic old fashioned bathrooms, a whole shelf of dolls from every corner of the earth. Lots of lace too which is also terrific. Lots of... More

very well laid out park with facilities along the paths. Park at the church and take one of the many walks around the park. Peaceful and serine, this is a place to get away from it all. No mobile or wifi coverage so peace at last!! If you wish to drive the 5.5 km circuit, there is a €5 fee... More
