I have visited Bolsover many times over the last 15 years (since using it as a case study for my Dissertation) and the opening up of the garden wall walk, and the continued restoration of the interiors ensure that this unique castle continues to be really interesting to visit every few years. Also good to see more volunteers stewarding rooms... More

Stopped off on the way home and was not disappointed. On buying tickets we were told all about membership to English Heritage to such an extent the Advisor forgot to tell us about the free audio/visual guide! This is did not detract from our enjoyment of the castle. The Cavalier Horsemanship display was impressive but the "live" presenters could do... More

We visited on Friday April 17th. The reception immediately tried to sell us a guide book and said there was 'some signage' .We declined the book. We weren't offered the free audio tour that we found out too late. They didnt tell us where to go and we found out later we should have gone to the storyboards first in... More

The sun was shining and views from the castle were amazing. I was pleased that I had taken advice from Trip Advisor reviews and made use of the free audio/visual guide which cleverly demonstrates how the castle would have looked when it was inhabited, however it would be better if there was a clear recommended route as I found I... Bolsover Castle is so different from many of the properties we have visited. The mix of ruins and restored areas is quite intriguing. Once you have passed through the reception, you encounter a long stone building, pass through a gateway into an enclosed green with an ancient tree in the middle. Down one side is the stable/menage building which you... More

Visited here with our God daughter who is 6 and said she had the best day ever!she was fascinated at how big the ruin the was and how old the riding range was. She did a lot of wondering about and imagining and became a great spotter of hinges, floorlevels and ancient graffiti. The visit gave us a great story... More

The signage in rooms isn't good and without the guide book plus talking to staff/volunteers it wasn't easy to understand what we were seeing. The children's Easter treasure hunt was difficult for adults so goodness knows how the kids were supposed to solve the clues

Visited as a group of friends. Was offered audio guide on entrance to castle however chose not to do this as it meant we couldn't chat and spend as much time together. This was not a good choice as there is NO information anywhere. This was very disappointing as we ended up walking around rooms with no understanding of their... More

This is a lovely castle to explore with the family, which is worth doing a little reading up on beforehand to fully enjoy the experience. Check before visiting the times of the horse demonstrations as this is not something you want to miss out on. Good facilities, friendly staff and a reasonable entry price.
