It was a cold day when we visited, which perhaps encouraged the brisk walk round the grounds. But there's no denying the beauty, and a summer visit would probably show off the gardens in a much more enjoyable way. I didn't find the house particularly "exciting" although the library was the most interesting. If you've young family then give the... More

This is one of the best NT landscaped gardens anywhere in the UK. It has a mesmerising mix of trees, lake and follies [buildings] set in wonderful parkland. In addition it has a great café and shop at the top adjacent to the parking area and a gallery shop and snack bar including ice creams on the lower level near... More

The house is good but the grounds are just superb.m king Alfred's tower is worth a side visit. Be careful around Christmas as although it lists the house as open it is just the entrance hall way

Smallish but very interesting property with very helpful volunteer house guides. The grounds are substantial and we will visit again in warmer weather giving ourselves at least half a day. Restaurants, café, pub onsite but picnics allowed. The property is managed by the National Trust.

I especially liked to discover 'Harry's Story', which was so sad. The way his mother sought to help the soldiers wounded in WW1 was inspiring, especially when she had to deal with her grief. Well worth a visit. We didn't have time to take in the gardens, but they must be impressive when the blossom and flowers start!

Visited with family with one wheel chair user. Only the downstairs of the house is open to the public however this is absolutely fabulous, the staff present in each room are on hand to explain any thing and give you a detailed history of the room and its contents. Very knowledgeable. The rest of the grounds are beautifully maintained and... More

We set out on the most awful day but the weather had improved dramatically by the time we reached the house. Although still showery we spent the morning inside enjoying the house my partners camera doing overtime! she loves to record all aspects of an attraction and it is lovely to watch her at work! As other reviewers have said... More

A beautiful house and park with a tranquil lake with lots of temples and grottoes all around it. Don't miss the grotto with statues and fountains and also the gothic cottage, a handy spot for coffee and cakes on your walk around the garden. The house is very grand and beautiful with lots of interesting artefacts and furniture. The Pope's... More

We like visiting historic houses and were a little disappointed by this one as there is only about 6 to 8 rooms to visit on the ground floor, but having read its history most of what would have been of interest on the upper floors was lost in a great fire in 1902? We did think the café was a... More
