Great example of industrial age 1800's full working mechanisms still in operation. Living history in action. Well worth a visit if you are interested in industrial age mill techniques. Nowhere else has a working example. Would definitely recommend it. Not for children.

If you thought spades could be interesting you are severely mistaken. What could have been an interesting journey of an important historical place turned into a long and dragged out lecture about spades, spades and more spades. This is definitely not a place to bring children unless you wish for them to be bored to sleep and yourself also!

Not interactive we walked around saw how to make a spade in different parts but not fun. All you did was watch people do stuff and didn't get to do anything yourself.

I was not too sure what to expect but this was well worth the trip. Very enthusiastic guides not only explained how this water mill had been converted to drive the machinery required to enable this mill to produce 140 spades a day but they actually did it in front of a fascinated audience. We watched a lump of steel... More

Visiting from Australia having married a local girl 35 years ago and found this little gem. The enthusiasm of the staff was commendable and we will be telling friends to make it a "Must see"

My husband phoned the Pattersons information number and a recorded message informed him that the mill was open for visits. We drove over 30 miles to look around the mill only to find when we arrived that they were closed. On phoning the national trust to complain about our 64 mile wasted round trip I was told that the Trust's website... More

Not really my thing Spades but I am a farmer's wife (so I feigned interest) actually it was quite interesting and loved the old sheds and original production equipment National Trust guys very welcoming, friendly and seemed to know their stuff (but I know nothing about spade making!!!). Not particularly easy to access if you have mobility problems as there... More
