The engine can be seen working during the last saturday of every month at midday for around 15 mins. But its not just a big steam engine there's loads of things for the whole family to do and engage with the exhibits. Its a... More

We live locally and decided to walk to the winding house as it was open Sunday and we could have refreshments before heading home. The walk was further than we anticipated and we're glad to see a friendly face. Reasonably priced drinks and snacks with lovely friendly staff. There was a wartime exhibition on which was very interesting, tho, my... More

A lovely museum with wonderful displays. My grandson who is 6 years old thought the Roman display was awesome. He was really interested in the wheel and wants to pay another visit when it is running. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The exhibition on the war was really interesting especially the mock trench. I am certainly going back... More

We visited here on damp day and found a really interesting, cosy and friendly museum. Interesting galleries included a local project on WW1 with lots of artefacts on loan from local families and, of course, the Winding Room itself with the large wheel used in the days of mining. Staff happily provided information on the museum items. Topped off with... More

This may not be a very large museum but it is well worth a visit and has friendly and enthusiastic staff. The current World War 1 exhibition is fascinating with a terrific amount of memorabilia etc given or loaned by local people - almost too much to take in on just one visit. We finished off our visit with cake... More

Came for a visit on a very wet August Bank Holiday Monday specifically to see the World War I exhibition. My boyfriend who is a Great War geek and has visited battlefields and numerous Great War displays was extremely impressed by it's aaccuracy. The exhibition is small, but highly informative, yet contains enough detail to inform without becoming repetitive. I... More
