After taking a breath, you get in the cable car which goes fast and up, and up...When on the top, a tremendous view, a mountain restaurant where you can have a drink or more, and the you discover the alpine lake, covered with ice, which you can go round for a highly pleasant walk ! Going down on foot or...with... More

We stopped off in Kandersteg during our train journey through the Swiss Alps. We were looking forward to snowshoe walking and a picturesque snow white village. Unfortunately there was only the remains of past snow thin on the ground that was otherwise icy from rain. We took the cable car up the steep climb towards Sunnbüel. It was lovely to... More

We caught the 11:00AM Sunnbuel cable car up from Kandersteg and hiked main trail to the Gemmi Pass, where we enjoyed lunch (beer and roesti with a view of the Alps across the Rhone Valley). On the way back, we also stopped at Hotel Schwarenbach for beers. We caught the 4:30PM cable car back down to Kandersteg. That tells you... More

Although I enjoy the walking and climbing moutains best of all, the Gemmi Pass has some paths suitable for all abilities to enjoy with lots of alpine flowers and amazing scenery plus some stunning waterfalls.

We "cheated" by taking the gondola lift up to Gemmipass and then hiked up further a bit from there. We had a lot of snow but were lucky to see a herd of ibex. Gemmipass itself is a gondola station and looks like any other ski station, save for the incredible views over the vertical cliff in the direction back... More

I was last here as a kid in 1976. I looked at these old 1976 photos in our album before returning in July 2013. I was shocked to see that they added HUGE electrical towers and power lines all over at the top that have completely destroyed the once spectacular view (Unfortunately I didn't take more photos of the ruined... Long but so worth it for the views. Wonderful hotel en route and very friendly. Views of the lakes are incredible.

Great hiking up here but too snowy to be fun this month. I'd suggest waiting until July. Heavy spring snows has made for mushy conditions...beautiful!

We made a 8,5 km trek called Schneeschuhtrail Panoramaroute. Recommended for the lovers of mountains, snow and taking pics. Not very hard trail, but the marking of the route can be quite confusing sometimes. Take also a map with you before you start the trail ;)

Well maintained paths, but a lot of inclines to traverse on the way from the cable car at Kandersteg up to the end of the pass. Excellent restuarant at the top of the pass, where there's another cable car from the valley below (this is into the next Canton). The walk back to the cable-car is much easier, being a... More
