We found the Heidegarten (in English: Moor Garden) when looking for a good place to explore the Lüneburg moor landscape. Having a few months old baby, it was clear that one of the typical bicycle tours or long hikes is not really a good option for us.
The garden itself shows all the variety of the plants typical for the moor in a small area. Next to it is an observation tower and a nice restaurant in a pretty old farm building. Here you can also book a ride through the moor in a horse-drawn carriage or choose one of the several walking paths through the moor landscape. Each of the paths is described by length, elevation, and level of difficulty, and there are clear signs so it would be hard to get lost on the way.
We chose one of the shortest paths and had a wonderful 1,5 hour walk through the moor and the fields while the baby was peacefully sleeping in the carrier and getting some fresh air.

This is a beautiful place to enjoy the Lueneburger Heide. From meadows of Erika (this is the name of the Heide plant you see all over), to horse-drawn wagon rides, to watching the round-up of the Heidschnucken (sheep specific to this area). There is a small dirt parking lot with a café/gift shop. From here you can go on horse-drawn wagon rides, varying in time from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Several walking trails take you around the meadows and to the main circle garden area which showcases all kinds of varieties of Erika in a colorful display. In the evening, the sheep, which are escorted during the day by shepherds and their dogs throughout the meadows, return to the stable and you can watch the return. If you are lucky, you may see the Heidschnucken along the trails while walking. We went on a cold, breezy day and returned to the café for hot split pea soup and a cup of coffee, both very inexpensive and just what we needed. Seating is outside, and limited under the covered roof, but we went there during the week and there were not many people at all. There is a larger parking lot closer to the Heidegarten, and there is another food place and bathrooms. Use of the bathrooms is 50 cents, to be placed in a box. There is no entrance fee for this garden. It was a fun and relaxing walk with lots of fresh air. You can easily spend three hours here, especially if taking one of the wagon tours and waiting for the Heidschnucken round-up (depending on the season, sometime between 5 and 6 pm.) The café stayed open until 6 pm as well.

Called here September 2017 and it was spectacular.
Came back in June 2018 and it was just ordinary.
Couldn't even get any service at the Cafe even though we we the only ones there. Staff too busy sitting outside smoking and talking so we walked away without anyone even asking if we wanted anything. Guess they thought we were standing at the shop counter for our health. Oh well!

Although it was not the season for heather, it was interesting to see the different kinds, all well labelled. The view from the wooden tower was great and we had a wander round the old building and just wished it had been warmer so that we might have partaken of a snack in the outdoor area of the cafe (which was shut)!
