This castle is a treasure. Because it was a church castle it is a little different from the more frequently found barony castles. It is huge and spectacular in scope and contains some excellent art work. We enjoyed the views from outside and walking and eating in the area.

What can be better but to look around a castle that holds brilliant paintings then to eat in a restraunt serving wonderful German cuisine. Breathtaking views and a walk along the river Main. So lucky to have been here and experience the best of Germany. This is what memories are made of. Admission fee to see the paintings...... Well worth... More

This is one of those town that have it all. The castle is nice and all, but the view from there is even more impressive with the river and vineyards in one side. There are a lot of small shops, trails for bicycles, landscapes for photo lovers. etc. I highly recommend it :) http://youtu.be/ylyu9qVg94U

Schloss (Castle) Johannesburg in Aschaffenburg really is a sight to behold. I am lucky enough to have family who live here but I have found that many travel brochures for rivercruising in Europe will use the castle on their covers. In terms of things to do there...well not much, but the cobblestoned streets in the old part of town and... More

ShloppelzepplsBrauries- gasthouse provides the best place to view this place.Good food-real beer-My favorite inexpensive food was their gulasch suppe. Schloppl Zephl was a soldier with Gusavus Adolphus Army during the 30 years war-he recieved a severe lag injury and couldnt fight in the army- so he used his skills as a brewmeisterI spent three years in this town 1974-7. I visited this beautiful castle grounds on a sort of last-minute decision having already passed by the city of Aschaffenburg on the A3 motorway a couple of times. It's colourful history (was rebuilt from ruins twice) made a deep impression on me. At the time of my visit it was hosting besides its pernament exhibition an exhibition on cork models... More

This castle/museum will be best appreciated by visitors with some interest in German history, but the art collection has some worthwhile pieces as well. One unique display contains a collection of scale models representing famous Roman ruins -- the detail on the models is impressive; it's unique partly because the models were carved from cork! There aren't many displays that... More

Such a beautiful castle and grounds. Near the castle is also an exhibit that has artifacts from Pompeii, a little odd to see it this far from Italy but interesting. I would set aside 4 hours or so, to tour the grounds and surrounding area. For a great photo, go on the other side of the river, park at the... More

its simply beautiful - beautiful restored - the whole setting just prefect - often there are concerts in the courtyard as well as the famous schlossfest - the wine bar - also located inside the courtyard is very typical for the region - try one of the franconian wines - they remind me of wines from the san gimignano area...
