During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there. « less

Very nice pedestrian-only shopping area. There are thousand year old buildings, narrow streets, old bridges, a beautiful church, and good food at very reasonable prices. This section of the town is not large, and one day is sufficient to see it. More

This gem of a city should be far better known. One of the few German 'Old Towns' that escaped Allied bombing, it's packed with architecture both great and quaint. And it's small enough to be easy to walk round. Good food and drink, and a very warm welcome everywhere. More

When most people think of Germany, they picture a quaint Bavarian town like Bamberg. Everything about this town is charming and feels like a step back in time. It has cobblestone streets, adorable half-timbered buildings, a flowing river, bridges, cozy bed-and-breakfasts, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is also known for its many breweries. Bamberg is one of the only... More

This place is so quaint and charming that you don't want to leave. The beautiful bakeries, cobblestone streets, and colourful period buildings make you so relaxed. The bridges and the water in the sunshine just made me feel so happy to be abroad. The medieval cathedrals were also very beautiful. It was a pleasant change from the busy hectic city of... More

Wish we had seen the inside of the beautiful church and the old town but according to the police officer that shooed us off there is no parking near the town after 1:00 pm. If we had another day i would have loved to start looking for parking earlier and see the beautiful town. More

I have been there couple of times and always had a wonderful walks around. The style is absolutely different, no gothic architecture - seems to look a little bit like France. At the same time a lot of water (River, chanel) in the town which looks really nice. House walls in the old part of town are pained. All in... More

This city is absolutely amazing. The weather here is perfect almost the entire year round. I was amazed to see one of the world's most beautiful cities tucked away deep in Bavaria. Although the people can be a little rude, the overall beauty of the city is unmatched anywhere else in Germany for a city of its size. The riverwalk... More

A lovely old town. In excellent preservation with lots of lovely cafes and restaurants. But driving can be a challenge with the narrow streets and one way system. Best to park in the underground carpark on the edge of the old town and walk. We had a wet day this time but with good weather you can spend several nice... More

The city is a beautiful city filled with cobblestone streets and old buildings waiting to be explored. Take your time walking throughout the city, drink the local smoked beer, and eat a delicious meal. Tip: Don't visit on a Sunday. The stores are closed and Bamberg has lots of fun antique stores to visit that you don't want to miss. More
