“Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

What a great way to travel! Along the beach, over rocks, pass cliffs & finally to see thousands of gannets doing their thing. A fun morning. Our driver Colin was sensational, the commentary & chance to see where the ground had moved during the 1930's earthquake was excellent. The walk up to the gannet colony is quite steep but well... The lovely owners, Colin and Kim, of Gannet Beach Adventures, use a tractor pulling a wagon, with you seated, along nine km of stunning beach and cliffs, to the trail leading to a large, feisty gannet colony. Definitely worth your time, and very reasonably priced. Better than expected, gorgeous scenery, fun, with cheerful drivers, this is a unique experience for... More

Loved everything. We expected to enjoy seeing the gannets ...and we did. But also surprised at how much we enjoyed the strata on the cliff sides. The tractor ride was so much fun and added to the trip. We were glad it was a very hot 32 degree day as a fair bit of water splashed up on us. Made... More

We had a great time bouncing along the beach on a trailer behind an tractor. Rod was informative and funny. The Gannet colony was amazing to view. We went on an overcast day, but be aware to take lots of water, and sunscreen, and sturdy shoes, as the walk to the colony is very steep.

4 hours adventure which pass quickly as it is about the cliffs, the sea and the gannets. The best part is at the end of the drive where a 20 minutes walk up the cliffs brings you very near the gannets and where you can enjoy a beautiful view. Good shoes are advisable. The guides provide you with a lot... More

The tractor and trailer ride out to the colony is a great way to go. You see so much scenery, very dramatic cliffs etc. short climb up the hill to get to the gannet colony which provided superb views. Our driver Rob was excellent and pointed lots of points of interest along the way. Suitable for all ages. Highly recommend... More

Wonderful family run day out. The staff were excellent and VERY informative. The history and geography info during the various talks and presentations at various stops along the way made for a better understanding. We are a family of 4 ( children 11 and 13 yrs) and have shared with many family and friends the stories linked to this wonderful... More
