Owner description: “Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

My husband, myself and our 4 children recently did this. What a fun afternoon! the kids loved the tractor bumps on the beach and lifting up their legs to keep from getting splashed by the waves. The gannets are stunning! you can get within a couple feet of them and see them at eye level!! the tractor driver was very... More

This is a must do trip. Make sure that you find out what time the tour is operating as it only operates as the tide is going out. It is more than just going to look at the wonderful gannet colonies as the guide tells you so much more than you would have ever have found out about the rocks,... More

My friend says I'm being too poetic. But there you go. It was a fabulous day. We were impressed by the enthusiasm of our guides who so obviously enjoy what they do. For many of us, just being towed behind a tractor would have been a new experience. We were lucky with the tide fitting in with our plans and... More

very early morning as the trip with Gannet Beach Adventures is depending on the tide. And yes: it is an adventure. At the starting point you get one to a wagon, tossed by a tractor. Along the beach you are brought close to the Reserve of the gannets at the cape. On the way, you get lots of information about... More

A very iconic kiwi experience, awesome, captivating and a learning experience about the local geology and history. The gannets are amazing but the trip out and back on the tractor is also really enjoyable. A bit of a climb up to see the gannets. Don't wear your Sunday best it's very casual. Departures are dictated by the tide times. Its... More

Go out to see the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers - walk for hours with the risk the tide could catch you out - no way - ride on a trailer pulled by a vintage tractor with a driver giving you lots of information about the cliffs, the history and the gannets. Very unfortunately the driver will occasionally lose concentration... More

We wanted to see the gannet colony and didn't fancy the walk so chose this. Great choice. Having been on the tractor, I certainly wouldn't recommend the walk - long and potentially dangerous if you misjudge the tides - and I am a keen walker. The whole trip took a bit over 4 hours and we set off at 3:30pm... More

Thanks for the detailed review - great to hear you enjoyed the trip and thought it was good value for money, we do try and keep the costs reasonable (not so easy sometimes!). The beach condition hasn't been great so far this season (this time last year the drivers were all complaining as it was too easy and not enough... More

Thanks Colin for all the information about the cliffs and their history. The gannets were almost unimportant after that :-) And great to ride shotgun with you on the tractor. Highly recommend gannets.com

A perfect way to view the Gannet Colonies at Cape Kidnappers is via the beach and what better way to travel then on a trailer being towed by a tractor. Colin our tour driver was entertaining and very knowledgeable. As well as talking about the Gannets he talked about the cliffs and their history. The walk from the beach to... More

This is 3rd time I have taken visitors from overseas on it You travel along beach on trailer behind tractor. Its 9 klm one way incase you are silly enough to walk it At the very end is a very steep hill where the gannets are so you need to be quite fit to walk up there .BUT WELL WORTH IT
