Owner description: “Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

We were lucky to have a fine day but a great trip to the Gannet colony. The walk up to the top is demanding and requires a level of fitness but the ride along the beach is an unforgettable experience.

Absolutely super experience that far exceeded our expectations. Two adults and three children (aged 12, 12 & 10) all found this adventure fascinating. The wealth of information imparted by our guide Colin was amazing making the journey informative and thrilling! Yes the Gannets themselves were wiffy but they were also oh so majestic. The walk to the top colony was... More

This was terrific fun, zooming along the beach behind the noble Minneapolis Molines tractor, and the expertise and spontaneous enthusiasm of the " crew", including Kim with her wonderful smile, made it the most memorable day we have spent in ages. The geology was extraordinary and the gannets beautiful to see so close, but my word they do hum a... More

What an absolutely fabulous morning - $42 per adult. Started off at 0730 on a glorious summer's day. This is the only way to do it - tractors and trailers and fabulous scenery and wildlife. Trailers are more comfortable than they look. If you sit above the wheels you are more likely to get wet but that is part of... More

Sunshine. Gannets. A ride on the trailer of a vintage tractor and some hilarious drivers. I've done this trip several time and enjoy it just as much every time. Make sure you have your camera, sunblock and hats, water and some food and you'll be sorted for a great adventure. Be prepared for a hike up the hill to the... More

This is the best ever thing we have done and all of us loved it. Great value for money and just the best staff. We have a 10 and 13 year old boy they both loved it. The walk to the gannets is beautiful. Suggest you pick a seat on the right hand side you'll find out why when you... More

There are other options for visiting the gannets but I can't imagine how they could even compare to this one. The tractor ride along the amazing beach and cliffs was worth it alone - the gannets are just icing.

A Must!!! A fun ride on the tractor along the coast with excellent guides who have personality and a wealth of information on the area. The gannets were fascinating birds. We learnt so much about them.

This came highly recommended by our guest house host so despite the early morning start we decided to go and had a great time. The trailers are much more comfortable than they look and we were amazed at what they were capable of traversing. The drivers were informative but also good fun. You get very close to the gannet colonies,... More

With over 100 5 star reviews and not a review below "very good" who can argue w/ the TripAdvisor reviewers ? The Gannets tractor ride past the Cape Kidnapper cliffs is like nothing else I can think of and was truly a fun and informative engage with nature experience. This is a GREAT way to start the morning or end... More
