“Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

This is a great day's activity. Take food and drink. Make sure to have sun / wind protection .... you are out in the elements all day, and maybe something warm depending on the time of year. Backpacks are placed in the centre of the trailer and are safe and secure there. There are toilets when you get to the... More

Great fun trundling down the rocky beach. Interested and interesting guides. Fascinating geology. The poor guides had to chip away the bigger rocks for us to get through, but they stayed cheerful.

We decided to book this tour mainly because walking to the main colony (18km return) didn't fit into our busy schedule. And booking the tour was a good decision! Reasonable value for money. On the way to the gannets lots of interesting things can be seen e.g. impressive limestone cliffs and spectacular views of the area. Although we didn't make... More

We were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the outing. Amazing cliffs along the beach on the 9km trip out to the see the bird colony. Our tractor driver, Murray, was very knowledgeable with the history of the area and of the gannets. Not to be forgotten was his warm sense of humour and his driving skills around and... More

The trip from Napier to the Gannet Rookeries was in itself very scenic, but the most amazing thing was to turn the corner and find thousands of gannet parents and babies right there in front of you. This experience at wildlife up close was something I will never forget, it was the highlight of our New Zealand trip.

What a great way to travel! Along the beach, over rocks, pass cliffs & finally to see thousands of gannets doing their thing. A fun morning. Our driver Colin was sensational, the commentary & chance to see where the ground had moved during the 1930's earthquake was excellent. The walk up to the gannet colony is quite steep but well... The lovely owners, Colin and Kim, of Gannet Beach Adventures, use a tractor pulling a wagon, with you seated, along nine km of stunning beach and cliffs, to the trail leading to a large, feisty gannet colony. Definitely worth your time, and very reasonably priced. Better than expected, gorgeous scenery, fun, with cheerful drivers, this is a unique experience for... More

Loved everything. We expected to enjoy seeing the gannets ...and we did. But also surprised at how much we enjoyed the strata on the cliff sides. The tractor ride was so much fun and added to the trip. We were glad it was a very hot 32 degree day as a fair bit of water splashed up on us. Made... More
