“Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?” Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

While some people decide to leg it, we opted for the tractor tour offered by Gannet Beach Adventures (http://www.gannets.com/). Depending on the tide you will have to plan which day to go. We settled for an early morning ride on a gorgeous sunny day. The starting point of the tour is just next to the camping site where we had... More

Well, today was 'Gennit' [Local dialect for Gannet] day in Napier. We arose from our fitful dozing at 6:30am (now I know the meaning of bedrock as it applies to mattresses) and headed down the coast to Clifton Beach. Colin was our guide, an enthusiastic and personable tractor driver, who weaved his way between rocks and cliffs on our one... More

Excellent value for money and an enthusiastic guide who gave us lots of information as we took a tractor ride along several kilometres of beach to reach two colonies of gannets. Along the way we saw fossils and earthquake fault lines and lots of shoreline interest. Not sure the ride would ordinarily be as bumpy as it was the day... More

Thanks so much for your review - yes, the beach was very messy after the cyclone and stayed that way right to the very end of the season! We are keeping our fingers crossed for much smoother beach conditions next season - the guides are all sick of picking rocks! Many thanks again, and kind regards Kim Gannet Beach Adv. More

This is a great day's activity. Take food and drink. Make sure to have sun / wind protection .... you are out in the elements all day, and maybe something warm depending on the time of year. Backpacks are placed in the centre of the trailer and are safe and secure there. There are toilets when you get to the... More

Wow what a way to spend Easter Sunday . Very popular . 2x tractors pulling 64 adventure seeking people . Amazed the large amount of New Zealanders seeing this special coastline . Cape Kidnappers. All aboard with our 2 tractor driver guides . Over and around huge boulders and even the occasional pick axing of huge rocks to enable us... More

Great fun trundling down the rocky beach. Interested and interesting guides. Fascinating geology. The poor guides had to chip away the bigger rocks for us to get through, but they stayed cheerful.

Thanks for your review Russell - the rock-chipping unfortunately continued right up to the end of our season, however the poor guides are now on their winter rest! Glad you enjoyed the day with us and the other aspects of the tour. Many thanks, and kind regards Kim Gannet Beach Adv. More

We decided to book this tour mainly because walking to the main colony (18km return) didn't fit into our busy schedule. And booking the tour was a good decision! Reasonable value for money. On the way to the gannets lots of interesting things can be seen e.g. impressive limestone cliffs and spectacular views of the area. Although we didn't make... More

Many thanks for taking the time to review our tour! Apologies for not being able to get you all the way to the end that day (unfortunately the beach deteriorated even more after Cyclone Pam but that's another story!!) but we hope to see you another time. We were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the outing. Amazing cliffs along the beach on the 9km trip out to the see the bird colony. Our tractor driver, Murray, was very knowledgeable with the history of the area and of the gannets. Not to be forgotten was his warm sense of humour and his driving skills around and... More

The trip from Napier to the Gannet Rookeries was in itself very scenic, but the most amazing thing was to turn the corner and find thousands of gannet parents and babies right there in front of you. This experience at wildlife up close was something I will never forget, it was the highlight of our New Zealand trip.
