We visited Mont St Michel on Nov 25, 2009. We were on a TransAtlantic cruise and one of our ports of call was Cherbourg, France. An excursion was offered to Mont St Michel. The bus ride was approx 2.5 hours each way but the Normandy countryside is so beautiful and green that every minute was enjoyable. When we arrived, the... more

Don't miss this attraction. We drove from Caen in Normandy (1.5 hrs) and it was well worth it. We went in May 2009 and it was extremely busy. If you don't like crowds then this is NOT the place for you. Everyone on staff there was very polite and helpful. I would recommend getting the audio tour, it really helps... more

I had visited this impressive sight over fifty years ago as a child and now I made sure we included this as a must item on our trip to Normandy, France in September, 2009. I paid the admission (less than 10 Euros) for the unlimited-time self-guided visit to the very large church building atop the island of Mont St. Michel.... more

We drove from central Normany area to the island abbey knowing only what we saw on Rick Steve's show. After having seen several cathedrals already we expected the same thing with the abbey. It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. It is actually a world of its own, a shopping area, lots of museums, a real maze. Lots... more

Thousands of tourists descend by day making the Abbey packed with people and almost impossible to appreciate. However, by night, the Abbey is charming, intimate and beautifully illuminated. During the summers, the Night Walk is the way to go! When the tourists leave, the Abbey and the Mont St. Michel becomes romantic and charming. More on Mont St. Michel and... more

Our day at Mont St. Michel began with a 45 min wait in traffic starting 3 km from parking. It was understable and well managed as a lot of people were arriving - this was at 11 am. We ended up parking at the back of the lot which was good as when we left at 5 pm, we used... more

Rick Steve's guidebook allowed us to think that the abbey would be open late during the summer but it closed at 6pm just before we arrived. The gift shop, however, was still open and we made some purchases. We had been given the impression that getting to the abbey would be a strenuous climb but even with five children it... more

I can honestly say all the photos in the world cannot sometimes prepare you for what you will see first hand. Le Mont was one of the places in France I was longing to see & I was not disappointed. . From Arromanches we crossed the Cherbourg Peninsula, firstly to Bayeaux were we stopped to view the Cathedral and then... more

Mont St-Michel is gorgeous and is heavily photographed from land and air. This magnificent, thousand-year-old structure is world famous and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also the most over-visited, tourist trap that I have ever seen. I had dreams of this place as a remote, isolated Abbey. A holy place, trapped in time, that felt like a bastion... more

I had been very excited to see Mont St. Michel and, driving up from Dinan, as the Mont rose out of the morning sea-mist the sight took our breath away. However, having paid our €4 for parking and trudged up the grubby car park, we found ourselves in a very, very touristy castle that ended up looking like some sort... more
