High up, deep in the mountains, looking out onto the glacial lake gave us a real sense of solitude in this natural wonderland. There was no better time to switch the 'Off' button, stash the phone away & take out a good bottle of wine, for an hour or two we enjoyed existence without Facebook & instant texting, we found... If you're staying in Cauteret, you simply can't leave without a visit to Le Lac de Gaube. You get there using a combination of two ski lifts and a bit of walking, but nothing too strenuous.

Lake was very cold so not a place where you can have a swim - you can walk to the end of the lake and the same way back - there was a bar/restaurant

Easily reached from the Pont d'Espagne, the Lac de Gaube is a popular spot for a shortish walk in lovely scenery, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. From there its about 2 hours to the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube. The target from there is the Grand Vignemale (graded Facile, but not easy for the inexperienced ), and the Perit... More

Well worth the walk from Pont d'Espagne. Do not miss this the views are breathtaking. We even saw a mountain goat on the way back diown. There is a little place there for refreshment too. The walk is for anybody who is reasonably fit. My seven year old found this an easy walk.

We took a day to hike here from La Raillère (about 3 hours walk) which goes up the hill to the side of a river ending up at Pont D'Espange (Bridge of Spain) - which is a high arch bridge over some waterfalls. From there you walk another 5 minutes to a chairlift to get up to the lake or... More

We decided to visit lac de Gaube, but we took the cable car and stair lift up on a very warm day. Great views from the top and only cost €25 for two adults for both lifts. Up on the top is a bike track and watching them fly down the mountain (sometimes crashing in big heaps) The walk to... More

We walked all the way from Pont d'Espagne till the Refuge Oulettes Gaube. After an hour walk we arrived at the Lac de Gaube, and the view was breathtaking. Alternatively you can take the cableway and reach the lake in only 15 minutes by walking. If you instead continue around the lake and the up to the Refuge Oulettes Gaube,... More

Short walk to a great lakeside setting which can be shortened further by taking the chairlift from near the very large car park. Can recommend continuing to the Refuge des Oulettes with an amazing view of Vignemale mountain and glacier the whole way. Need a certain level of fitness for this but well worth it.

We wanted to test our snowshoe skills and headed up to Lac de Gaube for a 'run'. It was initially unclear where the trailhead began but once we found it, on the left side of the road between the carpark and Pont d'Espana itself, off we went. All uphill initially once the trail levelled out it was a pleasant stroll... More
