A very pleasant experience tracing the history of printed fabric in the Alsace area. As a visitor with limited French language skills it was difficult to make the most of the experience. The staff were very helpful & keen to promote the museum.

It's very unusual for a museum to combine technical and artistic aspects of a subject as effectively as this one does. Mrs M was inspired to delve further to see whether some of her ancestors who used to live in Mulhouse were involved in the textile business. We had a fascinating lesson in the use of block-prints from a one of the museum's staff who explained things very engagingly. The display of giant printing machines was as impressive as the exhibition describing how the local textile printing industry was eventually beaten by competition from Japan. Too hurried a visit, we'd have liked to stay longer and seen more.

Having previously enjoyed the Anokhi textile museum in Jaipur, India, and finding myself stuck unexpectedly for an extra day in Mulhouse, I took myself here, and was very glad I did.
A nice little touch was that the entry ticket was a little piece of printed textile.
After the initial display of other techniques for decorating fabric (batik, embroidery etc) the museum did an excellent job of putting textile printing into its historical context - from the routes by which it came to Europe from India, the political history (protectionist laws banning textile printing in France), through to the increasing mechanisation and new skills developed as a result (engraving the metal rollers) and the impact of the industry on Mulhouse and the area. There was a video presentation about the discovery and development of synthetic chemical dyestuffs.
The special exhibition at the end was about fashion in what Britons would call Victorian times (the French referred to as the 2nd Republic) - interesting parallels with "fast fashion" of today.
They also offer hands on workshops (you'd have to book in advance) to have a go at wood block printing.

A fascinating museum showing the craftsmanship involved in fabric printing in the Alsace region. Beautiful intricate work - so time consuming- and with magnificent results. Would have like about 5 meters of each print!!

This is an unusual topic, but textile printing has been quite important to Mulhouse. Kudos to the textile printers of the 19th century who decided to start saving exemplaires of their equipment. Well worth your time.

The staff were helpful. there was a cafe and a shop but the displays about Mulhouse history and the history of textile design and manufacture, taking in the history of colour which overlaps with the history of colour for art lovers was very interesting. I speak some French and altnough there is enough text in English to suffice, I think it is better if you can understand a bit of French,,

Kevin and I went to Mulhouse to visit this Museum and the Car Museum.
The Textile Museum is situated quite close to the train station and is an easy 5 minute walk (turn right out of the station and straight along the road -you will see the Museum on your left on the other side of the river).
Entry was about €5 each. The Museum documents the development of textile printing from the 1700's till the present day. They have a well stocked library of printing blocks from early years and have workshops from time to time (check their website). They also have some of the machines from the times of the Industrial Revolution when printing material really was revolutionised. It was interesting to see how the machines printed designs on the large rolls of calico.
There is also a display of clothes, furniture and bedroom linen to look at.
Unfortunately most of the explanations are in French although each room has a clipboard in English and Dutch giving an overall explanation of the major works and developments of the period.
This museum would be of interest to anyone with a passion for textiles.

A must see for textile lovers - great history of fabric making and textile industry in Mulhouse. We took a guided tour and were able to spent time in the documentation room.

This was handy for the hotel we stayed in but is worth a visit anyway as we found it very interesting. Lots of old wood blocks from pre industrial printing times, as well as explanations about modern printing. Fantastic museum shop, with lots of good present ideas.

Very boring and not worth your time. I am a Home Ec. Major and I expected to enjoy it, but did not like it at all. Not a lot to see.
