Allthough the Vosges region is very beautiful, because of its natural and rugged landscape, the 'Ballons' (the highest round-topped peaks of this mountain range, literally called: balloons) are rather disappointing. The 'Grand Ballon' is, for me personally, nothing more than a Teletubbie hill (despite its altitude of 1423 m above sealevel)...

Great motorbike roads through the Vosges mountains along the Routes de Cretes and up to the Grand Ballon. The Vosges mountains are a range of rounded peaks and have superb views from the top. In the snow, in the springtime and in the summer this is a series of large meadows looking south to the Alps. A couple of restaurants provide food and short way back to the west you will find a war memorial. Worth getting up here

the vosges mountains being old have rounded peaks. hence their name of Ballon or balloon. the Grand Ballon is taller than the Petit Ballon. on one side, the view expand on the wine region of alsace. and on a clear day, it says you can see the Alps. the day was not so clear. on the other side, more of...
