Although the beach looked great from a distance, once we walked down to the town and next to the beach, I was very disappointed. Not surprisingly though - I live in Bermuda with gorgeous pink beaches and turquoise water - here it was grey rough sand and the water seemed to have a lot of trash around. The bright orange... More

Coming from the Gold Coast in Qld Australia where there are some of the world's best beaches, we were relatively disappointed with most Italian beaches. Most were stony and uninviting to sit on. This beach actually had grey rough sand and a bit stony. It looked good though from the town and from up high. You could hire umbrellas and... More

On our one and only take-it-easy day in Italy, we headed down to the Spiaggia Grande and found a quiet cove where we shared the rocky beach with our books and an elderly lady fishing off a stone staircase. At the other end of the beach, music was blaring and people were enjoying the beautiful weather in a completely different... More

rather small stoney beach. Although deserted in Feb, it must be packed in summer months. Some restaurants with a view nearby.

rocky beach, but that is italy, we went to the private part, and for 10 euro each, we had reclining chairs, a beach umbrella with table, and we could leave and come back all day and not pay again or lose our spot. also, the guys got our drinks and snacks for us at cost, it was wonderful. the public... Spiaggia Grande (meaning big beach) is the place to go for fun, sun and people watching. Artists work on paintings along the promenade, colorful boats lay along the dark sandy beach, local men meetup here, leaning against the boats and enjoying lively conversation, children have bike races and play impromptu soccer games and buff Italian guys play some beach volleyball.... Came to Positano on the bus from Sorrento on Dec 31st. Beatiful warm day. Tons of folks enjoying the beach. Great gelateria right on the beach. Beautiful sunlight could have stayed for longer. Happy we made one if the last buses at 16:20. But was so full we had to stand the whole ride back to Sorrento! Well worth it.

We usually rent chairs in the first row and have become friendly with the merchants since we try to visit each year. Getting in and out the water can be painful as it is rocks from the Mt and not sand. There is sand further back from the ebb so thus the reason I call is a bit different.
