To the left hand side of the high altar, the chapel has some wonderful frescos, but it's chief treasure the the famous painting of the Madonna.

Orvieto is one of the most beautifully situated cities in Italy… a massive hill town built on tufa. The chapel is a must see when you are in Orvieto. Beautiful chapel with one of the most amazing reliquaries anywhere. Fantastic workmanship. And the chapel is, of course, part of the Duomo… one of the greatest facades you'll ever see. Orvieto... This chapel houses the relic of the corporale, or cloth in which a priest holds a communion wafer, from the miraculous Mass at Bolsena. Most decoration is fourteenth century. The walls contain frescoes recounting the history of the relic and other miraculous masses. The stupendous silver, gold, and enamel reliquary is in a case, now at eye-level so you can... More

Get a guide to explain the significance of the intricate carvings on the exterior and you'll begin to appreciate this architectural gem. We didn't even go inside, but were fascinated as the stories brought it to light. Thank you Insight Vacations and our superb guide, Marco.

I was there one evening while the... More

If you have a check list of relics that you are working on then I guess it is worth it. Fortunately it is part of the entry fee for seeing the Signorelli frescoes so take a peek.
