We first saw this splendid historic building in the evening while walking through the city and went back the next morning, before leaving this town again to make nice pictures in the sunlight. Wonderful architecture .

The basilica is set in a beautiful piazza and the facade has some excellent stonework, although on the occasion of our visit the uppermost tiers were under restoration. Whilst they were interesting they were hardly the hallucinogenic stonemason dreams described in the guidebooks! The interior is understated with quiet reverence, one must remember that this is a 'working' church and... More

Under renovations which affected photos, but still worth seeing. However, one understands the obligation to preserve thesesites.

Great light in it. Baroque, but not very charged inside. Spectacular façade plenty of figures. The voluta in the ceiling of the lateral corridors, made of stone leaves are really odd and beautiful.

The square is beautiful, the church is peaceful and just wonderful to look at. Architecture and Barocco are at their highest expression

I have to admit I enjoyed this church more than Duomo. This is the world largest Franciscan church. During St. Francis' youth Assisi was at war with Florence and given that it's astounding that the Franciscans chose to build this magnificent church here instead elsewhere in Tuscany. There are numerous frescos in the church depicting the life of St. Francis.... More

The Greek columns are still clearly visible, outside and in. The whole building is an example of a "nothing goes to waste" mentality that is completely fascinating. Walking around the exterior is as interesting as fighting your way inside, of time is short!

I loved the bascilica. The interiors were beautifully baroque and rococo. The limestone adds a beautiful colour.
