We travelled to this Mecca of the micropub industry and were surprised to see a television with international rugby being shown in the eclectic, interesting bar. The owner was very nice and gave us all the info we ever needed on micropubs. The beer was very good as you would expect.

Landlord Martin Hlillyer opened the Butchers as the first micropub, pioneering the movement, and he remains at the forefront. A great little pub, impossible not to find a decent pint on the list, all served from casks by Martin. Definitely not a men only pub. Sit on benches, butchers blocks for tables (only 2). A lively atmosphere fueled by humour... More

This micro pub on a corner was really once a butcher's shop and inside you'll find a well-worn butcher's block that is a little 'worn away' so be careful how you put down your pint glass. The interior is... well, quirky to say the least! Lots of fun stuff hanging from the walls and ceiling. But the main reason for... More

The first of a growing number of micropubs - no music, no fruit machines, no lager, no shots, just friendly conversation in intimate surroundings. It's tiny, very tiny, and just might manage ten or so customers. When you speak, people listen; when they speak you join in. Just how pubs used to be. Excellent real ales dispensed by gravity from... The Butchers Arms is not your Normal Pub. I say this in a good way. A really good pint or jug of ale will be served straight from the barrel to you by Martyn(Landlord) or Gavin(Tuscany Sunset Barman) in a small (front room size) area where you can sit at an original butchers block table (or stand if theres no... That's appealing not appalling! I have been visiting The Butcher's Arms for around 3 years. During that time it has got better and better. It's hard to see how it could improve more but it does. And this in spite of having what is universally agreed to be a grumpy landlord. It's probably this pub's greatest charm. Martyn Hillier is... More

Not a place for those wishing to have a private conversation or sensitive to the opinions of others BUT a gem if you like good company with your real ale and appreciate English eccentricity. Kentish Session and Truro Betty Stogs were brilliant. Do it !
