The Gaiety Theatre was originally a large pavilion opened in 1893. Shortly after opening it was closed and architect Frank Matcham was commissioned to redesign the building. In 1900 it was reopened as a grand Opera House and Theatre and it experienced great success. Throughout the 1950's the theatre was used as a cinema and by 1968 plans were made... More

This wonderful example of Victorian architecture and decoration is now in its 115th year and has hosted the vast majority of the Isle of Man's theatre shows and major events. The Frank Matcham designed building came close to dilapidation during the latter part of the 20th century but gladly the Manx Government supported strongly by many sections of Manx private... More

I have been going to shows at the Gaiety for years but had never even thought of going on the Saturday morning tour. We went on the first one of this year, on Easter Saturday, and it was a fantastic experience. We were guided around the whole theatre - downstairs, upstairs, backstage - and for the whole 3 hours Derek's... More

If you're in Douglas and fancy seeing a show go and visit - you'll not be disappointed - it's worth watching to see what's on and make your visit fit in with the show of your choosing. We saw The Edwin Starr Band and a lovely singer who supported them called Mel - what a voice! and what a lovely... More

I didn't go for a tour around here but after seeing a show here, I want to! This is a gem of a theatre with lovely decor almost everywhere you look, all immaculately restored. Even the seats have had a lot of attention! I would love to spend more time in here to actually look at the architecture of the... More

The Gaiety Theatre is like stepping back in time. It's a beautiful place and the atmosphere is always good. Some wonder if the significant costs in maintaining the place offer good value for money, and my head says it isn't. But in my heart the experience of the place it worth it.
