The Isle of man Steam Railway is all that remains of a four line system and is run as a tourist attraction. The Douglas terminus is close to the marina (signposted). The railway is a delight from the little engines with spotless paint and polished brass/copper to the four coaches which usually make up a train. Some coaches have a... More

This was great fun as one who can remember travelling as a child on steam trains to holiday destinations and for those who never experienced the joy of steam train travel, take the train from Douglas to Port Erin and back to enjoy a step back in time!

The flexible timetable allowed us to enjoy Castletown and Port Erin along with pleasant rides on the steam train. We liked Castle Rushen in Castletown and the small railway museum in Port Erin, which was only £1 to enter. No dislikes, just a very relaxing day...

Super experience, not too expensive either. Took the train from Douglas to Port Erin. Had a compartment to ourselves.

Just loved the whole experience, How the engine looked standing at the station; the different style of carriages; the sound of the wheels on the tracks; the smell of the smoke; and finally what it feels like to be a passenger while travelling though the beautiful Isle of Man countryside.

Apart from being part of the 'heritage transport' in the Isle of Man, this railway is very useful for getting to places in the southern end of the island. We'd bought a 5 day Heritage travel pass so used the train rather than the buses wherever possible.

I think a trip on the steam train is a must for visitors to the Isle of Man and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Everything is so beautiful from the train itself to the little train stations that the train stops at. The scenery from the windows is absolutely stunning.

The station in Dougals has a great cafe and the journey to Port Erin is relaxing and pretty. If you are going to travell on other forms of transport on the Island it is cheaper to get a travel pass which you can buy at most attractions
