Basically, just a well-maintained area of grass and flowers - but also a tranquil retreat, surrounded by attractive homogeneous buildings, from the modern-day bustle in the city below.

A very quiet peaceful area, well worth using the camera as well as finding the arched tunnel and going through to find a high view looking down to The River Wear
Be careful its NOT student enrollment day otherwise the Castle is closed to visitors and a wasted journey for those that have traveled!!
This area is part of the lead to the cathedral and castle area of durham there is a really good coffee shop here and there is often events staged on the green here.
University owned - so used for their events; however this beautiful green spot is a wonderful 'space' between the spiritual of the most beautiful 11th Century Romanesque Cathedral in Europe and its slightly older but much restored temporal Castle; once the home of the Prince Bishops of Durham. Thankfully a World Heritage site UNESCO protected from anything untoward.
A patch of green grass can't be an attraction point! Don't waste your time. There are places around this patch that you should visit! It is like I say ' the stair case in a museum is an attraction'! No, the stair case gets you to the attraction!
This is a strange place and often overlooked as Castle and Cathedral either side. You need to appreciate that this actually sets both them off and its worth having a seat on the edge and trying to feel the energy that seems to pulse around here.
Free to wander through, don't miss this beautifully kept historical backwater where the clergy and the choristers live, and carry on down by the river and around the bailey.
My spouse and I loved this certain square of grass. At one point I was just constantly spinning around in circles, overwhelmed by the view around me. On one side there is the cathedral (world class), opposite the castle (historical), and then there is the library and hall (ye olde buildings). I could have kept spinning for hours.

The Palace Green is just that a lawn. It is surrounded by beautiful buildings, eg the Cathedral, Castle and associated buildings. Mostly interesting for what it leads to.
