The museum tells the proud 200-year-old story of the Durham Light Infantry, especially during World War I and World War II. The displays focus on the experience of war, using letter and diary extracts, plus the actual voices of World War II veterans. Upstairs the Durham Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of exhibitions and events from concerts and talks to practical workshops for children and adults. An exhibition that is well put together and the use of artefacts actually used by some of the characters mentioned actually brings events to life in a very tangible way. There are dressing up costumes for the children too.

It is a fairly small museum but this does not stop it being any less interesting, there are a wide assortment of weapons from WW1 and 2 as well as military outfits and memorabilia. The quotes and diary entries from the soldiers are very interesting to read and make you feel proud to have come from the north east and... More

We enjoyed the exhibits and found the art "interesting"! It was a most pleasant visit and very child friendly.

Having read so many good reviews on here i decided to take my family. The only good thing here is the price £10.50 for a family. Upon driving up to the place you first notice just how small it is. You cannot hold rifles as they are all bolted down. There is only 2 helmets to wear and only one... More

Just returned from an afternoon visit with my wife and 5 year old grandson. I have visited years ago with my daughters and thought he might be a bit too young but he loved it and ran around dressed as a soldier. Staff friendly and exhibits are there to be touched, felt and sat on which is what kids love.... More

Good museum telling the story of the Durham Light Infantry with an adjacent contemporary art space which has a programme of interesting exhibitions. The building has a café and shop and is set in a nice large park which is good to walk in and/or is a nice walk from the town centre. It is about 10mins walk from the... More

I can't recommend this place highly enough. I visited on a wet weekend in October with a tough crows to please, namely 3 sons aged 14, 12 and 7. They absolutely loved it. Why? Most museums don't allow touching of the exhibits. This place is different; hold the guns, put the helmet on, sit in the jeep and armoured vehicle.... More

We have visited the DLI many times and although the exhibitions are rarely changed what is there is really good for both old and young. The grounds of the museum are also great being a nice place to walk around during summer.
