We were told we should visit the Town Hall to see the relics of Count Borulaski, a Pole who was only 39 inches tall and became a celebrated violinist. We were given a grand tour by Frank one of the receptionist who was very enthusiastic and proud of this amazingly old Town Hall with many different items of interest, especially... More

Most people come to Durham to view the magnificent cathedral. But the indoor market hall is a hidden gem. Situated underneath the town hall it has an abundance of little stalls each an independant trader. Lots of bespoke items such as jewellery will catch your eye and if you fancy a snack you can have anything from a jacket potato... More

A really enjoyable city. with plenty going on in and around the market square and on the river Although a little hilly in parts there are a number of lifts from the river up to the city and down of course. There is a rather enjoyable river trip, offering quite good views of the surrounding banks, bridges and the Cathedral. Very... More

Great little indoor market selling all sorts from fresh fish to silk ribbon. I was amazed to come across a little cake decorating shop selling specialist cake icing tools and decorations. Didn't expect to find that in a market. It's well worth a visit.

We stumbled into the glories within Durham Town Hall by chance, attracted by an art exhibition in the foyer. A leaflet on the counter prompted us to ask whether the Town Hall was open to visitors. Not such a daft question as this is still very much a working building. We were fortunate that a meeting had just finished and... More

In the old days you could rely on Woolworths to sell you a few nails or odd buttons but now you can go to Durham's indoor market. All the old services you thought had disappeared are here in a mediaeval- like setting; you walk downhill into the dark and crowded chamber to find a hotchpotch of stalls and eating places.... More

As it was very cold and wet the indoor market was a good choice. Also nice and warm in there not like the hotel we stayed in
