We recently spent six days in N.Devon and this was one of the highlights of our stay. We have been gardening together for over 25 years, and in that time have visited many, many gardens. Not only was the national collection of astilbes an absolute delight, but the hydrangeas and views within the garden itself were amazing. Everyone was so... More

A private garden that could do with a little more maintenance, true but definitely more a plantsman's garden than a show garden. Great stream side plantings. Had visited in 1984, 30 years ago and it has aged well.

On a recent holiday in North Devon we decided to visit the above gardens. Apart from the arrogant nature of the elderly man taking the entrance fee, the gardens themselves were in a very poor condition. I'm no professional gardener by any means but even I could tell that little or no general maintenance had taken place for many weeks... More

Once located - what a lovely surprise. The view over the gardens from inside the tea rooms is stunning. Naturalistic planting and pools make a very pleasant morning stroll even if it was 28 degrees in the shade. Small tea room with friendly staff and very good cakes rounded off a relaxed visit.

Took a coach party here last Tuesday although routè in is a little tricky if you follow instructions given to group visits its ok, there is a road closure on route but a member of staff took the time and trouble to ring me and tell me about it. Hydrangeas are beautiful although a very hot day it was lovely... More

A pleasant morning or afternoon could be easily whiled away in these gardens looking at the various varieties of plants and flowers on show. They are reasonably well maintained which is more than can be said for the the infrastructure of the site. Whilst climbing a flight of 'rustic' steps with an adjacent handrail we noticed the handrail was moving... More

My wife and I enjoyed a delightful afternoon in the garden at Marwood Hill. In mid-July the hydrangeas and astilbes were just spectacular. The tranquil setting in a valley with a stream running through make it a perfect spot for a quiet cuppa on a comfortable terrace overlooking the lake. The staff in the tea house could not have made... More

A smallish garden, but absolutely beautiful. Massive Astilbe and hydrangea collection. Good cafe with gluten free cream teas available. Well stocked plant centre.
