This lovingly restored house is set in a beautiful location overlooking Windermere. We liked the uncluttered feel and information on the colourful history of the house and it's inhabitants. The imaginative arts and craft theme is beautifully and imaginatively realised in every room and there are many rooms to explore. It was such a refreshing change from the victoriana of... More

If you are interested by architecture, this Arts & Crafts jewel should be on your list. The house has been restored but also included many original features.

Surer views over Windamere. Light lunch can be taken inside or outside in excellent weather. The tour of the historic house is pleasant.

We had planned to go and finally went when the sun shone and the views from the windows and gardens added to our delight. What a day out we had, admiring the spaces designed for a wealthy brewing family -the Holts from Manchester. When I learned the Holts also had a home in Prestwich, my home town, it made it... More

Well worth a detour! A marvelous house, built as Britain battled the Afrikaners in the Boer War. The house is full of wonderful carving, glass and metalwork. The inlays in the furniture are simply breathtaking, while the white room overlooking the lake is a place to sit and enjoy a marvelous view.

luckily we were able to sit outdoors, as the weather was lovely. Gardens nicely landscaped. Indoor cafe didn't look so inviting...

Blackwell is stunning, I have never seen a house so lovely and they had a wonderful Moorcroft exhibition that just topped my day off for me. Well worth a visit especially if you are an arts and crafts period enthusiast.

We have been here many times and the house and grounds never fail to delight. The house itself is quirky, on many levels. You enter by a fairly dark corridor which leads to a terrific "white" room with beautiful views over Windermere. On the left is a room with a gallery and it's a great idea to go up there... More

This is one of the most beautiful Arts and Crafts houses in England. I visited last year as well but the exhibitions had been changed and there was changes in the furniture lent from private collections so plenty to see. Shop and café both high quality. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Beautifully done. I don't understand some of the comments about it not being decorated 'in period' unless the author was not familiar with arts and crafts? To me - it seemed completely in period. There isn't a lot in the way of smaller objects - but I expect that is because it would have to be in glass cases which... More
