From outside, this museum is really impressive; on the inside, however, it was a little disappointing. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the map is easy to follow, but much of what's on show, is lack-lustre. The best bits were the Henry Poole and Co exhibition, the video story of the Bowes and the paintings - but we left feeling... More

Visited Bowes Museum on 5.4.14 whilst staying in Barnard Castle. This was not our first visit as we used to live in the area. Something has changed. The exhibition of silver was poor and it is very difficult to see silver items hanging 8' high. The fashion display was very dull although the work of Henry Poole &Co was very... More

had a excellent afternoon visiting the museum. Got there in time to see the Swan's performance very interesting[if you want to see that be there by 2 it only last 30 seconds]. The layout is easy to follow, and I was impressed by one guards knowledge of the museum. Not so impressed when I asked about who laid out the... More

The Bowes museum is a French Chateau housing fabulous collections showing the complete history of porcelain along with a wonderful collection of paintings and fashion. Marvel at the size of female waists. The history of the building is fascinating and you can not help feeling sad that the originators did not live to see its completion. There is also a... More

This is a must and all I can say is in support of the positive reviews that appear on this site. There really is too much to see and you could spend a lot of time here. The restaurant is excellent and the Staff are friendly and helpful.

Visited Bowes museum and I was amazed at all the exhibits on show. What a lovely building and very informative place to visit. The mechanical swan at 2pm is well worth watching even if it only lasts for 30 seconds. The artwork on display is beautiful. Will visit again.

The mechanical swan is a must see at 2pm - it's stunning and very lifelike :) There was a Manet painting when we went based on Emperor Maximilians execution by firing squad in Mexico which was amazing.

We were staying in the area and read about this museum but were just amazed when we got there. Who would have thought this wonderful collection of objects would be sitting in Barnard Castle. If you are ever in the area I would strongly recommend a visit. It may seem expensive to some, but you can spend a full half... More

Excellent variety of exhibits from textiles to silver, porcelain to classic artwork, something for everyone including youngsters. Dont miss the silver swan at 2pm. Lovely tea room, a little on the expensive side (I am from Yorkshire !!!) and was disappointed that the coins/medals display was poorly lit and unviewable. Overall a good half day visit with friendly and helpful... More
