Spent four hours exploring this wonderful museum and there is still more to see for another time. Don't miss the silver swan automaton which plays at 2pm.

Lovely building & grounds. Fantastic paintings & lots of other things to see. The mechanical swan was a bit of a let down. Nice café.

One of the best museums that I've been to, not in a major city. The collection is easily as good as what might be expected in a national museum and yet with a local twist. It's full of interesting artefacts and pictures. The mechanical swan certainly lived up to its billing. I could definitely go back again and if I... More

Barnard Castle is not easily reached from any direction on fast roads but the journey from our Tyneside home was both pleasantly scenic and worthwhile after a 75 minute drive.. This museum is set in pleasant well maintained grounds and has a stunning French designed exterior. Inside it is similarly well maintained with some wonderful exhibits including the Pitman Painters... More

Looking for something to do on a wet day, my family visited the Bowes Museum. The house looks magnificent as you pull in through the gates, and some of the rooms such as the dining room are equally impressive inside. There are some very interesting exhibitions - I particularly liked the ones on Victorian childhood and fashion - and the... More

Decided to call in on a spur of the moment decision and was not disappointed. Although not that interested in ceramics was able to enjoy the rest of the museum and was I thrilled by the Silver Swan. A good collection of paintings some done by Josephine Bowes herself. There are spectacular grounds, a good shop and restaurant.

Set in beautiful grounds overlooking the dales. Great cafe and a must see when visiting Teesdale. The museum with the famous silver swan is also highly worth going in to.

Exhibits set out well with good descriptions. Great if you are interested in ceramics. Get there before 2.00pm to see the mechanical silver swan in action. Lovely grounds to explore
