Bude Geological Walks are led by Dr Roger Higgs (DPhil Oxon 1986), a consulting geologist who has travelled the world for 25 years (and continues to do so) as a consultant for oil companies. In the 1980s Roger studied the spectacular Bude cliffs for his doctoral thesis, and now chooses to live here, 300 yards from the Atlantic surf, running his one-man consultancy 'Geoclastica Ltd'. Bude Geo-Walks operate all year (except when Roger is called overseas), currently departing on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am from Bude Tourist Information Centre. These fascinating 2-hour guided strolls along the beach examine Bude’s dramatic cliffs, made of hard sandstone and mudstone beds, zig-zag folded by England colliding with France 300 million years ago, long before dinosaurs existed. Geo-Walkers learn how these beds were first deposited as soft sand and mud in tropical “Lake Bude”, home to Bude’s own unique fossil fish, Cornuboniscus budensis, unique in the world and now on display in Bude Castle Heritage Centre.

Dr Roger Higgs provided a fascinating and really enjoyable afternoon's walking tour of the geological history of the Bude coastline, which fascinated everone in our family group. We learnt about different rock types, how oil is found in rock and extracted, how water levels leave behind clues as to the earlier animal inhabitants amongst other interesting information about rocks. This... More

My 12 year old son is keen on geology, so when we saw this advertised in the tourist information we just had to book it. And we weren't disappointed. Roger was full of information which he obviously just loves to share, and his enthusiasm is infectious! My son still occasionally talks about the things he learnt. A really pleasant way... More

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed Roger's extremely passionate and informative geological tour. You will learn more in 2 hours than you ever did in geography. Thanks for a very entertaining day.

What a fantastic 2 hours. Whether you know a few things about rocks, or nothing at all, Dr Roger will make your experience a memorable time. Every trip to a beach I ever have, will now be a lot more enjoyable and thought provoking than ever before. We have had some some great family discussions since our Geo Walk. Dr... More

The chap in the Tourist Office persuaded me to do the tour - absolutely no regrets! A real must-do when you are in Bude.

We have been meaning to book in the Geology tour for ages and today we managed it......there was just the two of us so a private tour! We have been coming to Bude for over 40 years and thought it was about time we learnt more about the area we have come to love so much. Roger was a fantastic... More

We booked a private tour having read the reviews on Trip Adviser, and we all completely concur with what others have written. Learning through seeing things in a new way, having them explained in an interesting and informative manner and getting a spectacular walk - it was all these elements and more! Both children ( one aged 9, the other... More

Decided to drag the kids to a bit of an educational trip whilst on holiday to Cornwall. Despite the rain torrential rain Dr Higgs gave a great talk 'n' walk on the geology of the local area. He kept the kids engaged and we are still in awe of some of the facts he told us. It made a nice... More

D r. Higgs gave us a super geological experience... 2 hours which flew by! A fantastic condensed history of the world in rocks, their type and structure, grain size., and smell!.. He talked about his finds, and encouraged us to think about the conditions such creatures might be at home in. The walk itself was not difficult, and we enjoyed... More

I attended this walk with my 9 year old son. We spent a thoroughly absorbing two hours and learnt so much. Roger is very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic. My son's verdict: the tour was awesome and Roger is cool! I'd recommend this walk to anyone who loves the coast and would like to learn more about their surroundings. You'll never... More
