In this day and age not many things are free and when they are it's usually because they are not worth visiting but Buxton Museum is both free and worth visiting. It's not big but the exhibits are both of excellent quality and really well presented. It's just the right size for children as they can travel through time from... More

For a free museum, this is fairly decent. Lots of effort has been put into the displays, and there's plenty of interactive things to engage with. We enjoyed seeing the unusual Feejee Mermaid which was more human than the usual simian design, so if you're a fan of all things odd it's definitely worth visiting if you are in town.... More

Visited on a very wet and cold morning (well what did we expect at the end of May)! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The museum is quite small but has an interesting display taking the visitor through the history of the surrounding area. There were 2 art exhibitions on when we visited, one of which seemed to me... Helpful friendly staff, nice little museum to spend an hour, not so impressed with the art gallery, but then I do not understand blobs of colour splattered on canvass pretending to be art

It's a small museum but with a huge amount of effort put in the way you walk through. Especially the historical part of the peak district is very interesting. It gives a lot of visual and physical information and evidence from the geology and findings. I really enjoyed it. Many large museums are not as characteristic as this one+it's free!

We visited the museum in Buxton last Thursday and were amazed at what a lot of superb stuff is in there, lots of extremely interesting history of Buxton and the surrounding area. Not too keen on the modern art section though but apart from that it was great!!

The historical timeline is totally poor and the displays old and whitered! A full renovation would be due! I missed more historical facts about the time after the Roman settlement - what about the Anglo-Saxons with Buchestanes, the Medieval age, even Regency and Victorian? The main theme of the museum is the art gallery. Nice but not my type. Glad,... More

A friendly and warm welcome awaited us when we popped in to learn a little more about the area through the ages. The staff are charming and helpful. The museum contains some fascinating artefacts including some very, very old coins. The exhibition upstairs flows nicely, starting with the history and evolution of the planet through to the more recent past.... More

The museum is set in an old interesting building but I did not find the museum very stimulating. It did seem a bit messy in it's presentations. The modern abstract art work by local artist had to titles described to tell you what the picture was all about. Not convinced the space was being used to show proper art. For... More
