This small, free, museum covers the history of Derbyshire including times when bears roamed the hills through to the influx of early tourists taking to the waters in Buxton. The art gallery often has work by local artists on display. This is a good starting point if you plan to spend a few days in Derbyshire as it introduces you... More

Spent almost an hour here - a good respite from the rain. It's fairly small but packs a lot in, and centres on a series of room showing Buxton's archaeological and animal finds through the ages, but done in an entertaining way. Some attempts have been made to make it more interesting for children - a number of small video... More

Unusual to find things free these days! Worth a half hour - especially if weather not good. Changing art exhibition.

No visit to Buxton is complete without the museum, though you could be forgiven for missing it as it is a little way from the town centre, at the top of a large hill, on the market place; a location largely forsaken by tourists and local council alike. Once inside, you are welcomed by informal and knowledgeable staff, though the... More

A thoroughly interesting hour spent in a museum that has a lot to say for itself from modern photograph exhibitions to the history of Buxton from the earliest times. The exhibits are clear and concise and the staff knowledgeable and helpful. There are not a lot of interactive things to suit modern children's ideas of a good place to be... More

Toddler goes here all the time with Grandparents and both loves / hates the bear!! The childrens facility and cushions seem to have gone missing ? Shame as that was really useful.

I wouldn't make a special trip just to visit the Buxton museum but if you are in the area, you should call in and have a look around, the museum is well run and has some interesting exhibitions. We have a couple of Nieces who are interested in rocks, so they like it a lot.

This small musuem and art gallery based in the heart of the beautiful town Buxton is worth a visit. It's not fancy and is void of any involvement from the world of technology but it displays interesting artefacts from the local surroundings. It is currently showing some fantastic artwork from local school children (some who will have interesting futures ahead).... More

Enjoyed a brief visit on a wet day when there was little else to do. There was plenty to keep my two boys entertained and they even spent a bit of pocket money in the reasonably priced shop which sells an array of gemstones and fossils. Took just under an hour, but free, so great value!
