High leer Castle was made famous by the TV programme Downton Abbey and when visiting it was even more dramatic in real life. A fantastic example of English architecture of the time and when inside you get look into the past. The grounds are amazing with beautiful walks and picnic areas. On the day that we visited there was a... More

I do travel tours of England and happen to be in the Southwest of England when Highclere was open to the public. If you are a Downton Abbey fan or not it is worth a visit. There are Egyptian articfacts and a great story of the Lord Carnavan. The house is wonderful and they serve a nice tea with great... More

Had a fantastic day out at Battle Proms in Highclere Castle in August 2014. Its all outside in the grounds, but right alongside the castle. Amazing music (with accompanying cannons !!), Spitfire display and wonderful atmosphere. Will be back!

Certainly Lady Grantham's quote describes the attitude and lifestyle of the Carnarvon family who owns Highclere Castle...a family whose ancestor, George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, went on to finance and excavate the magnificent tomb of King Tutankhamun in Egypt. And not being defeatist as well, the current 8th Earl of Carnarvon saved this wonderfully unique castle from ruin... More

Only spend a chorus in the ground, stunning place and immaculately kept. Children had great time before an early dinner at our hotel. Will try to get tickets next time but a long wait

I have never watched the 'Downton Abbey' television show so this is a 'bona fide' review of Highclere Castle from someone without any knowledge of that show. Perhaps I was more fortunate than some other reviewers who have complained about overcrowding, as my visit was a private one with other Friends of the Royal Academy. We were shown around on... More
