Some of the critical comments on here are underserved. What do people expect! This is a home as well as a piece of British history. I for one commend them for trying to keep the place from falling into dis repair. Of course some of the items were shabby...they are antiques! Of course you cant traipse through everywhere, they are... More

visited highclere castle on Wednesday via a gift voucher, very knowledgeable guides throughout the house who will tell you everything you might want to ask about the history of the castle and former residents who lived there over the years, although we are members of the national trust this house is not run by them but was on our list to see,was... The view from a distance was impressive, but little after that! Expensive, pretentious, the entrance hall was like a junk yard, the exit through basement/cellar corridors was poor, very little info, no audio, too many people admitted... We stood for twenty minutes at one stage before being able to move further down a corridor to peer into a room (you... More

Facinating historic stately home. Wonderful to have the chance to take a closer look at some of the fabulous rooms previously seen on 'Downton' The lovely lady guides who were available in many of the rooms were knowledgable and very pleased to answer all questions. It would have been really great if we could have seen the table set out... More

I consider the above to be poor value for 20£ entry.Whilst the grounds are very nice ,the only claim that castle has is use in filming Downton.Nothing is signed in the castle and you need a 9.50£ book to help. They need to take lessons from other houses,ie Chatsworth Holkham etc. who look after visitors.

If you'e not impressed by the architecture both inside and out there's something wrong with you. The collection of paintings, furniture, books and antiques inside is what you call a proper collection and a home which has been truly lived in for over 200 years. There are captions telling you where certain scenes in Downton were filmed and the gardens... More

Was very excited to visit. Very busy and had to wait in long queues. Staff were extremely rude, never a smile or friendly exchange. Nothing about Downton Abbey. More about the real owners. Castle is full of their own family pics- a little odd. Didn't get into any of the rooms. You can only view at the door. Gardens are... More

Had a wonderful day at Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) Went as part of a coach party. It is just a you would imagine. A magnificent sight. Very efficiently run operation and very knowledgeable guides with a guide in every room to answer any questions you may have. The only let down was the refreshment on offer. Not very imaginative, a... More

Highclere is so run down that there is no real wow anywhere. They are riding on the back of Downton but you have to realise that that is not a true reflection. Gardens are beautiful though so just visit them. Also the food was a disappointment. Beef pastie - there was.no meat at all in them. Should have complained. Two... More

My husband and I had the most incredible visit with a tour out of London. I booked it months in advance and was so worried we would miss the early meeting time of 8:00AM. We had flown in the night before from a two week tour of the Baltics. Everything worked like clockwork and we had David as an incredible... More
