As an English Heritage member a visit here when in the area is always a must. We have always found English Heritage staff to be friendly and welcoming and this location was no exception. This time we embarked on the guided tour which seems to be a new thing. Our eldest son wasn't too interested at first but was soon... More

We are English Heritage members and have visited the castle a few times now. It is good for a walk around and the views of the North and South bays are great. The tea room is also nice.

Beautiful town and a beautiful castle. Buy the guidebook! There weren't any guides stationed around the ruins to answer questions or give information. The guidebook had a lot of info to explain the history of this place as we explored. I got a lot of great pictures and it was well worth the climb up the hill!

It has been said that the castle has little to offer. The truth is that this is a castle oozing history and offering so much to learn and enjoy. We had the pleasure of a free site tour with our witty and intelligent guide Elliot. The guided tour turned our visit into an experience and really hammered home detail and... More

We visited the castle on a cold windy day. Elliot was our guide for 1 hour. He was very theatrical but told the history of the castle well. Even though we were battered by the wind, we learnt much about the castle and its inhabitants over the centuries. Our group only had 4 people. We had tea and scones in... More

We used our Barclays Premier Account to get free corporate access to the castle... Happy days. Steep walk up to the castle with a pram, but doable. When you get to the top there is a huge open space... I never expected that! There are old Roman ruins and an old chapel built on Roman beacon land, besides the castle... More

Entered the castle just in time to catch the guided tour which is included in your admission. Glad we did as we found it a lot more informative than what it would have been just reading the plaques that are dotted around the ruins. There isn't a lot of buildings left on the site and your imagination has to be... More

We went on a Saturday during the school holidays. Paid our entry - no audio tour offered. More interested in getting more money from us for gift aid (which I did pay) Went on up to the castle. Without the audio tour not much information on the signs. Despite it being the holidays nothing on extra for children (which would... More
