Visited as members of English Heritage. Be aware that it is a steep climb to the castle, whether you start from the promenade or the town. We were a little disappointed with this site as there was not much information about what went on here. The audio tour was not working on the day we went as there was other... More

On entering the staff were lovely and helpful. There was an option to borrow audio equipment for free which the kids loved. At each point it explained more about the history. The climb isn't too steep although there is no parking at the castle (although this isn't pointed out until you reach the castle). Lots of room to run about... More

After visiting the castle in the rain last October we returned on a sunny day last week. Beautiful views, really interesting displays and information about the different phases of the castle's history. Do not agree with previous reviewers saying it's over priced: quite how English Heritage are supposed to maintain, run & improve these big historical sites charging less than... More

Free for EH members. Make sure you get an audio guide on entrance as it gives so much info about the history of the castle through the centuries - I knew the details of Richard lll but wasn't aware of all the other history and just how far the site dates back. Take a camera as there are fab views... More

Great views and very nice on a sunny day. We ate in the cafe the food was great but very expensive. Well theres not a lot else I can say about this Castle but a little difficult if you are in a wheel chair or mobility scooter. You can go up inside the castle if you are good a climbing... More

Fantastic ruins, display boards and an audio guide. Café and gift shop with clean toilets. Went over August BH, there were wine tasting, curd tasting, volunteers like wool spinning and candle making as well as horse and knight displays. Without the events, very overpriced for non members. Be sure to visit the galleries above the café. Around 2 hours visit

Having visited Pickering Castle and Whitby Abbey in close succession I had high hopes when I saw the Castle ruins overlooking Scarborough. As with Pickering Castle, which is also an English Heritage site, there is what I believe to be a high entrance fee. The castle is situated at the top of the cliffs overlooking Scarborough and is a fair... More

English Heritage managed so very well maintained and lots of information/history. A lot of space to run around as well as the buildings/remains to see. Great view of the sea. On site café has very good local food (pricy, but worth it). If you're on a budget, take a picnic, they have picnic tables or plenty of grass to sit... More

There is a good audio tour included in the entrance price. Wild and windy but very interesting. Well kept surroundings as well.

English Heritage owned. Avoid the crowds Nice café- pork pie! Easy walk from main shops-steep slopes from beach. Scarborough is not structurally in the same league as most but has far more history so its well worth reading up before you go about the Pre Romans, Romans, Normans, Piers Gaveston, Edward II, Richard III, Civil War, The Germans in WWI...
