Colchester is an ancient charming Roman city in Essex, England. It has a medieval castle with a beautiful park where you can see wonderful flowers and trees. In spring, the wonderful wisteria is in bloom and many colorful tulips enchant the visitors even at the Castle Park entrance. From near the castle the hills around the city can be seen.... More

Colchester is an amazing town - formerly the capital of England. The Romans built thick walls of brick and stone around it and remnants are still extant - the gateway and uphill Balkerne hill is flanked by substantial sections. The Mercury Theatre is always producing fascinating and varied plays with additional material from amateur companies and comedians. A moderately priced... More

There is a mix of things to do and see in Colchester. A castle, remnants from antiquity, narrow lanes full of shops and wider streets with modern retail premises, are all to be found in the city. For a refreshing rest there is the Palace Gardens before going into the Town Hall for a well maintained historical building.

It is argued that Colchester is the oldest town in Britain, yet as a commuter town,32km from London,it has a lot of pull in the offer of attractions, such as, Colchester Castle, the Victorian Town Hall and the Jumbo Water Tower. But the real draw is the football team,Colchester United and the University of Essex in one of the driest regions of the... More

We visited Colchester for a short two day break. It was the first time we had been there and we would definately go there again. The city centre is easy to walk around and public transport was very good. The train service from London was frequent. We enjoyed seeing the Roman walls and gate way and all the other historic... New circus dig – yes! Lottery grant – no! Making the Roman circus centre is like climbing a steep mountain in the snow. It’s hard going and you keep slipping back. But the view at the top is fabulous and the prospect of success drives you on. This week saw two pieces of news – one brilliant and one ‘the... More

When visiting London for the first time with my group we decided to book a coach company for the tour. We wasn't expecting an actual tour with the coach, more of a pick up and drop off kind of thing. The coach driver was so knowledgeable and kind that he actually done the tour for us. We were taken to... More

We got the 9.38.am train from Liverpool Street and arrived in Colchester at 1025. From the Station it's a short walk to the Norman castle which was built on the ruins of the Roman temple of Claudius. Most interestingly the Roman temple was destroyed by Queen Boudica in the famous revolt of the British Iceni tribe in AD60. The castle... More

This small city has all the charm you could want and is only 45 minutes from London by train. Could be considered as "home base" if you're visiting during the Olympics and can't afford London's prices. There's lots of history here and much of it is still in tact! From the Romans to the amazing new museum of modern art.... More
