You can see why they built it here... there are excellent views in all directions from the hilltop site. The castle was thoroughly excavated in the 1970s so a lot is known about it. Although the ruins are not extensive they are easy to explore and interpret. There is a small but good visitor centre with helpful staff who do... More

And it's full of history. We love this place, and our under 5s love playing Knights. Go there, it is a great place that even sells very cheap refreshments and snacks.

There's not much of Sandal Castle left, but good management has made the most of what there is, providing an easily accessible dip into history for those that want it, or just a quiet place to enjoy great views. Practicality means the high point view platform isn't wheelchair accessible, but the rest of the grounds are and the views are... More

Modest little castle on the outskirts of Wakefield. Not masses to see (though I did give the visitor centre a miss to be fair) however, completely free. Also fantastic views of the local area from the mound.

This site is run by the Wakefield Council and as such is free access. The views over the Valley below across the Pugneys Country Park are stunning especially from the top of the castle itself. Although not a great deal of the castle remains on view the ditches and moat are of such a huge size that you cant fail... More

We walked from Pugneys following the footpath to Sandal Castle. Having climbed to the top, we enjoyed sitting watching the farmers harvesting their crops, taking in the views of Pugneys and Wakefield, and then looked round the ruins. Then we went down to the bailey and the information centre, which was excellent, with plenty of interpretation. There was also a... More

Sandal Castle stands in a commanding position overlooking the River Calder, Pugneys Country Park, the city of Wakefield, and the M1. Great views from the top. The ruins of the castle date back to the 13th century. It can be a bit gusty at the top on a windy day. Parking is free and there was no charge to get... More

As I'm typing this I can look up and see the castle set high above the surrounding countryside to the west in a commanding position over what is an overgrown grassy lane but was the old main road south out of Wakefield. The castle is now basically stone ruins having been demolished by Parliamentary troops in the Civil War after... More
