This is a great afternoon with children. Lots to see, interactive activities and art and crafts for the children. My 7 year old grandson loved it. You can go in some of the trains.

Situated quite literally on the North Road station and costing just shy of £5 entry the railway museum in Darlington has a lot of history crammed into a tiny place. I really enjoyed looking at the trains, particularly locomotion 1 and the two temporary exhibits (Butlins and ww1) were a treat. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this place as much... More

A small museum, but of national importance. Greatly undervalued and under-appreciated. Great for rail and local history enthusiasts of all ages and families alike.

This was a very quiet museum but it is a very important one as it is on the site of the first steam hauled public railway. We started by watching a short video which set the scene and then wandered round the interesting and informative displays which focus on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the local railway industry. There... More

If you want to learn about our railways then start at this museum which shows the earliest days and then proceed to Locomotion before going on to the NRM at York. We learnt this by doing it the other way round! Everything is explained so well and the highlight of the collection is Locomotion No 1. The remaining locos are... More

Unlike nearby larger Shildon version this one charges. Staff friendly and exhibits ok just not that many. But this does not have a cafe but this and Shildon home to first railways. Tip: if short visit only. Shildon better and free
