A small museum, but of national importance. Greatly undervalued and under-appreciated. Great for rail and local history enthusiasts of all ages and families alike.

This was a very quiet museum but it is a very important one as it is on the site of the first steam hauled public railway. We started by watching a short video which set the scene and then wandered round the interesting and informative displays which focus on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the local railway industry. There... More

If you want to learn about our railways then start at this museum which shows the earliest days and then proceed to Locomotion before going on to the NRM at York. We learnt this by doing it the other way round! Everything is explained so well and the highlight of the collection is Locomotion No 1. The remaining locos are... More

Unlike nearby larger Shildon version this one charges. Staff friendly and exhibits ok just not that many. But this does not have a cafe but this and Shildon home to first railways. Tip: if short visit only. Shildon better and free

The museum isn't very big but there is enough to keep you interested for an hour or so, longer if you have small children, as there is an activity room which was manned by a very helpful lady who encourages children to be creative. Stockton is unique as the birthplace of the railways and for this reason alone makes it... More

Very well worth a visit. Small and compact but with some fantastic exhibits from the birthplace of the passenger railways.

Whilst there was an entrance fee to this museum unlike Shildon we enjoyed this much more. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the exhibits were excellent. There was no café but the staff make tea/coffee etc on request and there are tables & chairs alongside the exhibits to use, such fun. There is a Morrisons with a restaurant... More

This is a council run museum so there is a charge £4.95 for adults. It's well run if a little small. There is however no denying the importance of it's collection - Locomotion the first engine to draw a commercial passenger service in 1825 is there. Check online to see what special exhibitions may be on, at the time of... More
