What a fantastic museum - sure, it's not as big as the nearby National Railway Museum's outstation at Shildon, and admission is not free, but the quality of displays is excellent and very interesting, too, so as well as just locomotives and rolling stock there are displays, images and various smaller items to look at. The collection of railway vehicles... More

We visited this museum on a Saturday afternoon and found it interesting; All of the exhibits seemed to work and there was plenty to keep a 5 year old and a 10 year old interested. it is a little small but well laid out and lovingly looked after. We liked the signs in the victorian toilets that they were exhibits... More

The Darlington Rail Museum was great for rail enthusiasts who enjoy learning the history of how railways first started. The link with the railway and the First World War was very interesting.

We were killing time and decided that this was a good idea. We were welcomed by a friendly member of staff who directed us to the small theatre where the introductory film was showing. From there we wandered round the museum and took lots of photos, stepping back in time to the bygone age of the romance of rail travel.... More

Was interesting to learn about the origin of the railways and of UK leading the world with this invention. Never realised this is where it all started. I remember traveling in the steam trains. That was when trains had character,

Darlington Railway museum may be small, but it contains so much important history; the original, un-altered locomotion No. 1 (with non-matching wheels as-was when it finished service) and multiple locos that were manufactured just down the road, this place is pretty much the first passenger railway station & train in the world...definitley a hidden gem that most would miss, and... This is a small venue, with a limited number of exhibits which costs [July 2014] £4.95 to get into. BUT, the building itself and two of the exhibits ["Locomotion No1" and "Derwent" are so key to the history of railways not just in UK, but the whole World, that it really is a must-see for anyone with even the slightest... Darlington Railway Museum is an undiscovered gem tucked away in a corner of Darlington. The station is light and airy and the graphics well laid out giving an overview of Darlington's history alongside that of the railways. The highlight of the collection is of course Stephenson's Locomotion no 1, the first steam engine to work on public railways and similar... More
