The Norwegian history section is quite good, upstairs there was an exhibit on hourses in history which was slightly better an d the only Viking helmet ever found is displayed there which is excellent. Otherwise there isn't too much to see in the museum as it isn't very large but its ok.

Well worth a vist. Free with the Oslo Pass.
The displays of the medieval period are worth a visit on their own. If you just have a 30 minutes to spare drop in. Wooden carvings on portals from the stave churches (c 1300) are moving, detailed and show incredible workmanship. The wall and ceiling paintings from a stave church pre-date...

Fascinating if slightly ragged display of early Norwegian history. But well worth a few hours. Sadly you have to search for guide books in English to interpret the significance of the unique exhibits and understand how the cultural history of the Vikings evolved.

The Viking department is amazing. I am a fanatic (historical reenactor) about Viking history and I loved this exhibit.

Surprised at North and South American Natives' textiles and clothing, but all first class. Small African artifacts collection. Odd and funny 20th century additions to 1,000 yr old artifacts, but clever. Really time well-spent learning. Nice neighborhood to walk around in.
