The Kon-Tiki story and Thor Heyerdal's life is such an attractive theme for a museum, but it looks like that the museum has not been updated since it was new some decades ago, and that's too bad!

Nicely located museum, walking distance from couple of other museums. We took a bus from city centre and walked to Viking Ship Museum, then to Kon-Tiki, took a ferry back. The museum itself is interesting - for anyone interested in history, geography and exploring, very nicely presented. Too much of reading to my taste, but I thoroughly enjoyed and spent... More

If you've read anything by or about Thor Heyerdahl, it would be a pity to miss this, especially if you're visiting the Fram museum as well. It's just facing it, a few yards away. That said, I found it a bit disappointing. It's got the original Kon Tiki raft, and the Ra, but the claustrophobic gloom they are kept in... More

The Kontiki museum is tiny, but hosts a great exhibition of two authentic rafts used by Thor Heyerdahl in his attempt to prove the point that America could be populated from Polynesia. The museum transports you to the atmosphere of exotic Polynesian islands and is also filled with incredible atmosphere of international cooperation in science and adventure combined in Thor's... My husband and I took a last minute cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo. We only had about 6 hours in the port of Oslo. Somehow he knew of the Kon-Tiki Museum and said that it was important for us to see it. I didn't even know the story until we went there. It was an amazing story of scientists who... More

As a young boy growing up, I read all of Thor Heyerdahl’s books and remember being absolutely fascinated. Visiting the Kon Tiki Museum brought back great memories of those books and Heyerdahl’s adventures. Something that came home to me that I had no appreciation of as a boy was the contribution that Heyerdahl made to the anthropology and archeology of... More

When I was growing up I remember our "Weekly Reader" (does that even exist today?) covered the Kon-Tiki story. When I first made it to the museum in the 80's it was fun seeing the raft and learning about the adventure in person. Neither of my 2 children claims to have heard about Kon-Tiki before I took them to the... More

We visited a number of museums in the Oslo area and we thought this was the best one. Informative and well set out. Worth getting there eraly in the morning as it can get quite full. The number 91 boat trip to the museum is a nice journey too!

Entrance is currently 65 kroner, just above 9 euros. The museum is fairly small, with a few large exhibits and relies heavily on imager, less so on explanations. Then, the exhibits are not laid out chronologically and oddly start with Heyerdahl's second voyage, continue with his third and only then focus on the first, the one that made his career,... More
