One of the emblematic places of Vienna

The city hall is a wonderful building, surrounded by a leafy park. In the square in front of the building usually occur cultural events of high interest.

While in Vienna, we twice went to the Rathausplatz for the summer-long food extravaganza that accompanies the Music Film Festival. Neither time did we hang around for the film. For me, it was all about getting a nice bratwurst with Zwiebelsenf, mustard with onions in it. My wife wanted the kaesespaetzle, what she calls Viennese mac and cheese, which is... More

Visited in August & September 2015 during the summer music film festival (July to early Sept each year). As well as the nightly free movies the area is set up with lots of bars and food stalls such that even if you don't want to see one of the films the place is just great to visit for a drink... More

One of the most beautiful buildings from my personal perspective. Love this place. It has also a small park area in the left and right side of the building. During the whole year something is happening: ice skating, movie festival, sport activities, exhibits, concerts (LifeBall), Austrian traditional festivals, always with good atmosphere and dishes, biggest Christmas fair and so on.... The Rathaus itself is an impressive building but, if the weather is reasonable, the adjacent parks (Rathauspark and Volksgarten) are worth wandering around. Plenty of food/drink stalls and places to sit down and enjoy the wonderful surroundings. The Hofburg Palace complex is within easy walking distance from the Rathaus by meandering through the parks.

The film and food festival dominates the Rathausplatz between July and September, with activities every day from lunchtime. A giant screen and sound system is erected across the front elevation of the town hall building and an auditorium of seats is arranged on the square facing the screen. A film is shown every day (free) from around 8.30 pm. In... More

Beautiful and imposing center of the local government. At the time of our visit a film festival was about to begin and there was a fabulous street fair filled with vendors for food and drinks.

Located in front of the Rathaus, Rathausplatz is always a hub of activity. Music, film and food festivals are a must, but our favorite was when we attended the Christmas market. You can't miss with any of the events held there.

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
