The Cultural World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Palace is Austria's most frequently visited tourist attraction. In the palace the residential and state rooms with their original furnishings and decorations convey an authentic impression of the imperial lifestyle. Schoenbrunn is close in to the city of Vienna, an easy quick trip from the city center. It's vast gardens and dozens of rooms make it a real "palace" experience; as a French history buff, it was interesting for me as the home of Marie Antoinette and her immediate Austrian family, and I could easily imagine her growing up in... We enjoyed our visit to Schoenbrun Palace as we could get a good feel of how the royal family used to live there and the audio guide comentary was very well done. The visit does not take too long about 60 minutes for the extended tour and the surrounding gardens are very beautiful for a walk.

My family and I spent a whole day at the Schoenbrunn Palace with a classic pass - admired the palace rooms, wondered around the palace gardens and spent a large amount of time at the playground and maze. We really liked the horse carriage ride through the gardens early in the morning. It's a ride worth the €65 if there... More

Beautiful palace with lovely gardens... which probably would've been nicer a bit later in the year. When I was there, the gardens were about to be planted. Worth going in the palace to see everything but definitely only do this palace or the Hofburg Palace. They're rather redundant.

Well worth the money to have a guided tour, otherwise you can use the handsets, well worth a visit to the orangery, take your time going up, it is worth the view once you have reached the top. Seats available to chill and admire.

Fabulous state apartments to visit. You will be required to put back-packs in the cloak room no matter how small. Mine was smaller than a hand bag carried by a woman next to me - which I pointed out to staff but they didn't care. Same in other museums so be warned. As an adult I wouldn't buy the extras... More

Tour of the Palace was worth it but I wouldn't bother with the extra add-ons. Complete waste of our money and time. Tour the Palace and then just walk around the gardens.

This my second visit to the palace. Although I prefer my previous visit as it was in summer time and the palace garden was tremendously beautiful, the palace itself keeps impressing over and over. Never miss it if you are visiting Vienna as it is the apex of the Hapsburg's legacy.

Staying in Hietzing

Neighborhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighborhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
