In mid-September we bought two tickets (of only a few remaining) at the box office for a performance of Puccini's Manon Lescaut scheduled for the following evening. When we got to the opera house the following night, we learned -- when the curtain went up -- that the program had been changed. Instead of Puccini, Mozart's "Magic Flute" was being... more

The state operahouse from the exterior is grand, ostentatious and utterly impressive. (As are most of the buildings in Vienna). Internally the stairway is nice made from marble and spotlessly clean. The bar is huge with lovely chandeliers and velvet sofas and chairs. The lighting is harsh and bright. The service is lacking somewhat. We chose a seat in the... more

Since we couldn't score reasonably priced tickets to the opera, the tour was well worth it. The times for the English tours are listed on a board on the right side of the opera house. We got there only a couple minutes beforehand, and managed to still make it (late-September) more

This is a lovely, opulent, historic Opera House, with gigantic statutes on the roof. It is right on the ring road, with convenient tram stops nearby. We had a great experience going to the opera on the cheap--standing room only tickets for 4 euros each (this put us in the center under the Emperor's box)-there are also 3 euro tickets.... more

We managed to get front row seats in a center box for an opera on Valentine's Day. A fabulous experience. Obviously, you have to enjoy opera a bit. The concert hall itself is understated but the foyer and the stairs leading up to the boxes are spectacular. The intermission lounge is also a must see. In the afternoon we happened... more

We tried to book tickets for the Opera House months in advance but it was sold out. When we got to Vienna we checked again but nothing was available. However, we learned that the Opera House does sell deeply discounted tickets for standing room. We were skeptical but discovered this option has several advantages beside the price. The process- On... more

When visiting Vienna, you must absolutely go to Staatsoper - but don't do the tour, see a show! You can book tickets a month in advance on their website - if you search around for it, you can even find the translation button which allows you to book in English (though I still didn't know exactly what I was doing).... more

This is a beautiful opera house, although to tell the truth I found the one in Budapest more intimate and charming. The lobby is very ornate, but the actual auditorium is pretty plain. Other than a giant chandelier there's not much in the way of decor. Far plainer than other famous houses. But I love love love the subtitles they... more
