This is a lovely, opulent, historic Opera House, with gigantic statutes on the roof. It is right on the ring road, with convenient tram stops nearby. We managed to get front row seats in a center box for an opera on Valentine's Day. A fabulous experience. Obviously, you have to enjoy opera a bit. When visiting Vienna, you must absolutely go to Staatsoper - but don't do the tour, see a show! You can book tickets a month in advance on their website - if you search around for it, you can even find the translation button which allows you to book in English (though I still didn't know exactly what I was doing).... more

This is a beautiful opera house, although to tell the truth I found the one in Budapest more intimate and charming. The lobby is very ornate, but the actual auditorium is pretty plain.
