This a very popular spot, but unfortunately we were rather disappointed. It was very pretty, but I think it was a bit built up in our minds therefore we were underwhelmed. After a few hours, all the territory had been covered, window shopping done so we visited the Mozart museum to fill time although we really weren't too interested in... More

Although I hear it is best when there are Christmas markets, in Summer and in warm weather, it was easy to walk around and there are plenty of places to visit both in terms of shopping with the old streets and open squares as well as the places of worship and museums. You can spend days in the old town... More

If you are planning your trip to Salzburg old town, do it during the Xmas markets. They create a great atmosphere and cover a great area of the old town. Yep it gets busy but hey, it's Christmas and there are loads of places you can get yourself a good punch or gluwein or even a beer. Get there early... More

We decided to take a train from Munich to Salzburg while visiting Germany. The train ride was very pleasant. When we arrived in Salzburg we had limited time so we set out for what we considered would be the "highlights": The Old Town was very interesting and quite nice to visit. Lots of shops and stores for souvenir seekers. The... More

We visited when the Advent market had just started which made it very pretty and interesting. Salzburg is a very compact city - would really recommend getting the Salzburg Card which gives free entry to many attractions plus free bus (which we didn't use). You can buy 24 hour, 48 hour or 72 hour cards. Definitely worth considering.

What a great time of year to visit!! We arrived on day 1 of the Christmas markets and it was magical!!!! I love Christmas and live in New Zealand so having the cold and dark again is amazing. The street decorations were up everywhere and it felt like half the city came out to enjoy the gluhwein and Christmas cheer.... More

We managed tow visits...one on a week day and the other on a Saturday...marked difference. Streets are quaint so very narrow and when crowded at the week end and presumably in season it leads to a lot more jostling! Shops are modern and amazing and so are their signs overhead. Suggest go on a week day.

Salzburg's Old Town is charming and a must-see if you are visiting Salzburg. It is a compact area that is easily alkyd. It is comprised of a series of squares, with historic buildings. Check out Mozart's birthplace, the fortress, and the wonderful shopping district. There is something for everyone in this old town.

I'm glad i went and it is beautiful but it was much more touristy than I thought and the centre is also much much smaller. But any place with three mountains in the middle of it can't be bad. Just enough of the Mozart references on every corner (and surprisingly very little about the Sound of Music)

I visited here with my 11 year old. There is history on every corner. There was a special area where chairs, hammocks, books and refreshments were provided for people to sit and relax. Fantastic.
