Must buy a lift ticket to get to the top. It's quick and fun. Once there, you get a most spectacular view of Salzburg. In the fortress, you can walk around to see the royal rooms. There's also a church. There are lively cafés and restaurants as well. It gets very hot in the summer, so go on a cooler... More

You can have a great view of Salzburg at the Fortress. The museums are also worth a while to see. Wished we had more time there

The steep ride up the Funicular railway to the top of this high fort in Salzburg and the breathtaking view of Salzburg river and the city around both its banks is an experience one is not likely to forget! One can walk up as well but that is not easy! The fort is sprawling and grand in its construction and... More

Take the tram up and walk down if you want a little excercise or for the more fit, walk up and back. It is an extremely well kept old castle that the town obviusly takes great pride in, the views for above once you get there are very special and you must sit and look out over Salzburg, it is... The tour of the Fortress itself was good but the views were great. Be prepared for climbing up and down stairs, but what you see is intriguing and the recorded tour information was interesting - but there was a large chunk of the Fortress that you do not get to visit which is why I only gave it 4 stars.... Definitely worth a trip, take the cable car up and walk down. I would recommend going on the tour, which operates free of charge but approx 40 people a time get to see inside the fortress. Then you go up the tower and get to see the views across Salzburg and the Untersburg.

We were not going to visit the fortress it seemed like it would take a lot of energy to see another castle but when found there was a funicular (better known as a tram or cliff lift) to take us up we changed our minds and were very pleased we did. We spent a good half day looking round the... More

We loved the smartphone app with information about the castle, we could read it and translate it to the kids in our on time. Great views and some great souvenir shops as well.
