The castle itself was nice but the views of the Alps and city were excellent. There are a lot of interesting military photos and memorabilia inside. If you have time there is a wonderful little terrace where you can eat or get a beer.

We've seen many fortresses/castles, but we really liked this one. Typical historical information and sites. The view from the fortress walls is a must see! There is a tram up the side of the the mountain to the fortress for those that can't hike up/down the steep steps/slopes.

The Hochensalzburg Festung is top on the must see list of Salzburg.
Perfectly located, it offers an amazing view to the city and the mountains.
We walked up there - it's really not that much as one might think and aproaching it by foot one can acctually appreciate its perfect location and how great its architecture flows with the landscape....

Admission includes informative audio-tour throughout the fortress, admission tot he museum, and more. Would recommend taking the train car up, then walking down, as the hike had a few people gasping and was very steep at parts. Incredible views of the city.

Follow the instructions on the map to look for 'location 1' where you can go for a walking tour of the insides of the fortress complete with an audio guide. Following this tour, you...

A very nice experience. Take the bergbahn up to the fortress.
Up there you have the view of the whole town and more. There is a lot to see and it can take a few hours just to walk around the whole fortress. Absolutely worth the money.
Our kids found it really entertaining as well.
There are a few cafés...

There was no one in the office. We managed to find a worker and asked for audio guide. He pointed us to fixed machines...
