My mom, sister and I traveled to Austria and LOVED visiting the salt mine. Getting there was half of the fun. There is a funicular that takes you from the town to a bridge below the salt mine with an amazing view of the mountains. From there it is about a 10-15 min walk up to the entrance to the... More

Yes, the anamatronic miners, light shows, and low budget videos throughout the tour are a little lame, but do not outweigh the natural beauty and historical significance of the mines. The tour itself will take you about 90 minutes (26 euro with cable car ride), and will explain the 7000 year history of the mines, the evolution of mining techniques... More

You really have to try this atleast once in your life! Wonderful scenery, a really fun funnicular, mine ride and slides, calming cruise in hallstat lake and the small open air museum like huts outside. Go in here for the whole experience instead of the hallein salt mines. A moderate walk from the parking lot to the city ( about... More

Take the tour, ride the slides, have a blast! This is a really cool tour that we were so glad we took, the area above the actual mine is gorgeous too, and the veiw from the top of Hallstatt is awesome.

If you in the area (it's near Salzburg, Austria) take an overnight stay and visit this beautiful old quaint and very picturesque town on a lake surrounded by mountains. In my opinion by car is best if you can, People are nice, price including hotels are reasonable given that it's a tourist area. We stayed across the lake at HOTEL... More

The weather wasn't kind to us in Hallstatt. It was a cold and blustery day, with occasional light rain. But if you're in town you just have to do it. So up the funicular to the top where the rain was colder and not quite so light. We would have liked to linger and take in the view, but the... More

It was fun to tour the salt mine and especially slide down the wooden slides. The tour is OK and you see a few interesting things but the funicular ride and the view from the top is fantastic. We had just a light dusting of snow so it was beautiful. A note to older folks, there is a fair amount... More

This is a brilliant trip. I returned to experience it after forty-two years. (I was very very young when I first visited!!!!!!!) Allow plenty of time - approx two and a half hours. Take the funicluar up to the 'dusembarking level'. Then allow approx 15-20 minutes to walk upto the Mine - there is much information en route. It is... More

The visit is sensational for both adults and children. It starts with the view of Halstatt and the lake. The visit is guided, and the explanation is in English and German. There is a very interesting audio visual about the formation of the salt mine and the prehistory. The slides and the train that are used to move around in... More
