We visited Melk Abbey as a side trip from Vienna. Just catch a train from Vienna and walk up to the abbey in 10-15 minutes. You're going uphill, but it's not a workout type of climb. We arrived at 9 AM and paid for our admission, including the tour in English, which was to begin at 10:55. We explored the... More

National Geographic Traveler Magazine is alleged to have stated that Melk Abbey is among the "best" historic sites in the world. If true, I concur. I have been to religious sites in many countries but few equal this in historic value, intrinsic beauty, and faithful commitment to one's religious beliefs. The abbey is a functioning Benedictine monastery on UNESCO's World... More

We visited this Abbey as part of our recent cruise on the Danube River. It is amazing!!! It has a hallway that is VERY long. There is a terrace that has wonderful views of the city and the river below. The library is unbelievable!!!! Loved the church as well. This is well worth your time.

Really worth a look if you are in the area. If you had to be a monk 400 years ago then this is the place to be. Impressive building. Great location on the Danube with great views. The opulence of the church has to be seen to be believed. Amazing ceiling paintings in the library and other rooms. Need one... More

We were staying in Vienna and decided to book a day trip by bus to the Wachau region, as it included a tour of Melk Abbey. The documentaries and travel shows that we had seen back home on TV, as good as they were, could not have prepared us for the grandeur and beauty of this monastery and its location... More

Rececent trip to this benedictine abbey. Very interesting with the help of a guide. Learned more about the Hapsburg dynasty and the imperial visits to the abbey. The paintings and frescos were amazing. Worth a visit.

This monastry is the first thing you see long before you arrive in Melk. It is a majestic sight. Well worth a visit. We paid 8.50 euro each entry fee. Not to be missed. The views alone are worth the entry fee. The abbey and the church are simply stunning. Really glad we made the effort to see this amazing... More

This Monastary is well worth looking at. Set high above the township it still houses about 30 monks the tour is very interesting we took bus up and then strolled down to the wonderful township below with many restaurants to sit.

We were driving from Salzburg to Vienna when we realized that Melk Abbey was close to our route, so we decided to take a look, thus saving a day trip from Vienna (which we weren't sure we could do anyway). We wished we had more time because it was so beautiful and it covers a lot of ground, but we... More

We came across this location purely by accident when looking for somewhere to have a coffee. It is a huge building overlooking the Danube and the small town of Melk in central Austria. The blurb in the car park describes it as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and we would not disagree. It is a perfect... More
