Imposing mansion with little to see

The appellation of Palace is a bit of an overstatement . It's an imposing mansion with uniformed guards and assorted family crests. Would not plan a separate trip to visit it but It's conveniently located between Norte dame and Place Guillame .

The Duke's Grand Palace is open for visiting only in August, unfortunately we visited it back in October. Still the front looked impressive, especially the place guards which are a sight to behold

This one actually has someone still living in it, unlike most we saw in Europe. Guarded by soldiers this was a neat sight to see.

A beautiful building in the city easy to stumble across although only the front is visible from the large square. There are a few coffee and hot chocolate cafés opposite and is a nice place to sit to soak up the Palais Grand Ducal on a warm sunny day, although when we visited it was very cold.

More like a large posh town pad rather than a what you would think of as a palace? Still, good tourist draw with the armed army guard ( not guards, due to cut-backs!) marching up and down outside the front door, all day!

Always read about Luxembourg so when we had a chance I jumped at the offer to take a train ride from Brussels to Luxembourg. Once off the train we walked across a long high bridge to one of the cleanest cities I have ever been. The palace was glorious with it's one guard. It almost looks like a castle from... More

As we visited in December, the palace was not open to visitors. The only way the palace is recognisable is by the armed soldier standing guard outside. It is also worth a look at the back entrance as it has a lovely gate.

Tucked into the edge of town you could overlook this as just another pretty building but the soldier matching up and down outside alert you to its grandeur. Looking up it almost seems like a Disney mock-up until you realise that this is a real fairy-tale palace.

But the eleven months of the year all one can do is stand on the pedestrian mall in front and look at a beautiful building. But it's just as beautiful as thsands of others in Europe. Fortunately, it's found on almost any random stroll arnd Haute Ville so it's not as if there was any special effort made to visit.
