Open: Tuesday-Sunday 11-16, Wednesdays also 18-20 The Sibelius museum is the only museum totally devoted to music in Finland. The museum building, designed by Woldemar Baeckman, is one of the most original Finnish creations of the 1960s. A selection taken from the 1900 instruments of traditional and art musics from all around the globe is exhibited. One room is naturally reserved for Sibelius´s life and work. During the autumn, winter, and spring seasons the museum hosts chamber music concerts on Wednesday evenings. The collections available at the Sibelius museum are of interest to both experts and ordinary music lovers.

Small museum; "big" concert

Part of Turku pass, one of the reasons we like Turku so much. Concert was free, interesting, somewhat intense as Finns are very serious about their music.

I went there for an exhibition and I quite liked it. It is relatively small, but interesting. Sibelius and his music just belongs to Finland! They organize concerts in there regularly during the year (cheaper for students) - check out their homepage for more infos!

This is a museum containing mostly musical instruments from around the time of Sibelius and before (one of which was a very usual combination of keyboard and bowed string). The collection was established by the local university, Sibelius also has some early connections with Turku. There is one room dedicated to him, but this is actually very good. It has... More

Small, interesting and well located Museum next to the restaurant Hus Lindman, by the river, near the university area and Cathedral. Selection of musical instruments and well designed building.

Liked: films of Sibelius, some weird and wonderful instruments. Extracts of his music to listen to. Disliked: I had hoped that the shop might sell sheet music.

The outside does look rather like an air raid shelter! Pleasant on the inside with interesting displays of historic instruments and about Sibelius. Listening to Finlandia in the central auditorium seemed very appropriate and quite an emotional experience - I'd like to check out a concert here some time.

A very interesting museum. Takes about an hour to look round. There are lots of instruments on display which are interesting as works of art as well as their musical quality. There is an auditorium where you can sit and listen to some of Jean Sibelius' music. Worth a visit.

This museum contains many clearly displayed exhibits, with supporting written remarks in Finnish and English. Some old films can be viewed, although the commentary is in Finnish, the snippets of music are a delight. Also some audio visual equipment. We also went to a concert in the evening, although the music was by other composers. The museum also houses an... More
