Walked through this cemetery for hours admiring the graves and the artwork on a sunny September day before heading down to Hietaniemi beach. If you're interested in beautiful artwork and the eerie peace that comes hand in hand with cemeteries (plus on your way to the beach) have a slow walk through here.

I visited this cemetery in a rainy afternoon in early May. I am a cemetery lover and everywhere I go I try to visit a local cemetery. This one was not one of the most exciting, atmospheric or picturesque. It was just OK. A bit boring, the gravestomes weren't particularly artistic, but I don't regret the hour or so I... More

I love to walk in the area in all seasons, its beautiful and has a soothing calming quality. Take your time to stroll and explore. The shoreline continues with more sights if you feel like a longer walk, especially towards the North.

The most beautiful and oldest cemetary is located less than 15 min walking from city center. Go experience the atmosphere and continue your journey to the beach (during summer time) or have a walk into a beautiful park of former mental hospitals park called Lapinlahti.

I love graveyards. This one is very central to Helsinki. I got the tram partway and walked the rest on a beautiful summer evening. I particularly wanted to see the grave of Carl Gustav Mannerheim a giant of Finnish history. He is laid to rest in a magnificent grave. There are many other graves from the Finnish Civil war, Russo... More

My wife and I stay in Omena Hotel and it is only about 10 min walk to this cemetery. It is quite a huge beautiful sanctuary that is well maintained. Do remember to bring a pack of nuts as you might just come across a hungry squirrel looking for a easy bite. Attached are photos of some beautiful tombstone in... More

If you want to spend a few hours walking around in a more peaceful setting in Helsinki I recommend Hietaniemi cemetary. Hietaniemi is right next to the centre of the city (5 min by taxi), next to the sea. The cemetery has many past VIP's resting in their final sleep, the area is well maintained, very calm and peaceful and... More

Visiting this place is easy, not so far away from Downtown Helsinki. If you are used to walk, go on foot over there. Pleasant and placid atmosphere there, reminds you that we all are here only for a limited time. Makes you to appreciate what you have, and, not what you don't! Some nice headstones of famous Finns.

Nobody of any significance who is not buried there does not come to my mind. To calm a too active mind this is a perfect place to relax. The squirrels there are tame. Please be not annoyed if they are climbing on you.

This cemetery abuts the sea, and provides a nice walking path that leads you around the cemetery. In the winter it is a wonderland, in the fall a great place to view the foliage. In summer the cemetery provides a quiet, cools respite from the sun. The place comes alive with lanterns on All Souls Day and glows with candle... More
