Lovely place: very children friendly, has nice cafes and a chop for souvenirs. Right in the city center.

This museum is right across from the main Helsinki train station which makes it very easy to get to. While we were there the third floor was closed and, judging from the postcards in the gift shop, housed some of their more famous pieces. The exhibit that took up most of the museum was the Jean Sibelius exhibit which I... More

This three levels' museum is situated in front of the railway station and dominates the square. To take note that the third level is still closed for renovation of the roof and it'll be opened in some months. At the moment the highlight of the museum is the exibition of Jean Sibelius (sculptures and more) lasting till the beginning of... More

Simple, good tasting soup and vegetalbes. And of course the black bread. I think sundays have a better serving than weekdays.

We visited Helsinki on a day trip from Tallinn and this museum was the highlight. We enjoyed the Sibelius exhibition. It's not a big museum but there's plenty to see in a couple of hours. The only criticism is for the cafe which served the worst meal we have had for some time (horrible salad bar and a weird tomato... More

I have visited a few times and been to a few exhibitions here. Currently they have an interesting exhibition on Sibelius. Also a quite a few other good pieces of art mainly Finnish, especially Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Good little shop and cafe too.

The museum is in a beautiful building that was under refurbishment when I visited. Only a small section on the ground floor was open to visitors. Despite this, it's well worth a visit! Entry was free and there are lockers and coatracks for your belongings. Plus, the lobby boasts free wifi and a nice selection of postcards and other gift... More

Went to see Tove Janssons exhibition and it did present her work nicely in a historical order. However, the real pearls of Finnish art history, the collection from the most famous Finnish painters is almost like hidden so when you are in the ticket counter, ask for the permanent collection or look around, you get there from this ticket/locker hall.

I came to Ateneum only for the Tove Jansson exhibition (which closed in September). I was however a bit disppointed that you weren't allowed to take pictures... But, hey - it was Moomin overload so I'm happy anyway! Free entrance with the Helsinki card.
