One of the few remaining "neighbourhood saunas" in Finland. Heated each day with huge logs. Here you can meet all kinds of people, university professors, recently released in-mates and tourists from Singapore all naked and in peace. And you can cool yourself in the street (please have a towel for that).

Being an experienced sauna user I thought a visit to Helsinki's only remaining wood-burning one was essential and I was deeply disappointed. I am sure they market this sauna as "historic", but for me, it is just old. Any sauna you may have have used in your own country is probably both more enjoyable and better-looking than this. Separate saunas... More

We were told that finish go to the sauna on Saturdays, and the best place to go was Kotiharjun, a public one in Kallio area, heated with wood. When we arrived there, people were seating outside, wearing just their towel and with a beer in their hand, and talking with the others. I really enjoyed the wooden smell inside, and... More

A good way to introduce the core of Finnish hospitality and culture. When passing by you can meet the naked men steaming outside the sauna to cool down in between taking the löyly ( the hot steam bath) in the sauna.

I've had a few semi-official business meetings in Kotiharjun sauna in last few years. It is a big open sauna in Kallio, with modest facilities for discussions and a place to sit outside to cool down the overheated body. The sauna itself is great, you can choose from several different places to sit - you can practically kill yourself if... More

I really enjoyed my time in this traditional sauna, we were the only travellers amid naked Finnish. The sauna is incredibly hot! As a funny habit, people on the way back to the shower increase the temperature for the ones staying by pulling a rope and introducing more steam in the room. Very cool also to stay outside in the... This was the first European sauna I have ever been to and it was everything I had hoped for. So unique and true to its form. The cost was very reasonable and you can bring your own beer. I will go back when I get to Helsinki again.

Tips for a smooth experience. Bring two towels from your hotel. One to sit on can be a small one, just enough to cover the real estate of your seated bum. The other one is to dry off with when you're finally done. Lockers provided can handle a day or backpack. Bring your own water and stick in the freezer... More

For a quite acceptable 12 euros, you get an authentic sauna experience. Recommended for enthusiasts and sauna rookies as well. The temperature is quite acceptable.

There are three traditional public saunas left in Helsinki. Kotiharjun Sauna is my favourite of these. The atmosphere here is unique with people from all walks of life enjoying the sauna experience with a communal dressing room, simple tiled shower room and a big sauna with perfect steam from a giant wood burning stove. You can rent a towel and buy...
