Big & small orthodox church

The church seems from street quite huge, but inside is intim, beautiful and little bit dark with thousends candels. Lovely iconostash wall

The Uspenski Cathedral is the biggest orthodox church of the western world. It is different from the Lutheran or Catholic churches and thus interesting to see. If you have the chance to visit on Sunday during a service, it is even more exiting. The location is convenient in the city center and the view from the church-yard is also nice,... More

I was in Helsinki on a Sunday so there was a service on when I visited; very nice of them to let visitors enter and leave during the service. A shame you are not allowed to take pictures inside, but undertsnadable

We were fortunate to be present for a wedding. Visitor could be there. There was the most beautiful chanting and a music group. The bride and groom had crowns held over their heads all of the time we were there about 15 mins we were not sure why and shall look into this. It was a lovely experience. The church... More

When I go up to the cathedral, I can see views of side of helsinki. So, it was nice. and some of children, they are practice songs. I can hear and listen it. It was one of good experiences.

I walked past this cathedral as I was walking from Katajanokka (which is also close enough and worth strolling around) and thought it was interesting. I then went on a walking tour with Happy Tours (who were fantastic) and was brought back here, but this time went inside. It is surprisingly small inside but interesting to look at. I would... More

It is a beautiful sight on a sunny day with the sun shining on the golden onion topped domes. Easily located a short walk from waterfront ferry and marketplace area. The other advantage of a visit here are the views across the city. While said to be one of the largest Russian Orthodox cathedrals in western Europe, inside is not... More

It is interesting because of its architecture. Nice for a walk, there are some pubs close that are ok.

Absorb the view of the Helsinki skyline from outside this building, perched on a grass-covered rocky outcrop to the east of South Harbour. Then enter the church by a small side door to the right of the main front door. Despite the spectacularly shiny onion-shaped golden domes, the rather plain surrounding garden and red brick exterior, though interesting, belie an... More

Well worth a visit, even if you only look at the outside. Step inside to experience the quiet and solace of the cathedral. Worth spending some time inside.
