Senate Square make up the oldest part of the city. Landmarks and famous buildings surrounding the square are nowadays the main tourist attractions of Helsinki: the Cathedral, the Government Palace, the University and Sederholm House (the oldest building of the city)

Senate Square is the main public square in Helsinki and the natural starting point for exploring the city. The neoclassical buildings on three sides of the square were built by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1820 and 1850. The Lutheran Cathedral takes pride of place at the top of a long flight of stairs, with the National Library on the left... More

A square surrounded by impressive old buildings are alway worth seeing. But the buildings are more interesting than the square itself - it doesn't have a soul of it's own. But go here anyway.

Great looking place with beautiful buildings. Architect Engels has designed most of them, but I think some buildings on the South side were older.

This is a large square in front of the Lutheran cathedral. It's the best place to get photos of the cathedral, and also a statue of Alexander II. Really more of a photo op type place, but worth going to for that.

The senate square was remodeled in 1812 to look like St Petersburg, and was supposed to group the religious, political and academic powers. It was designed with a neoclassic style. It is in the center of Helsinki, bordered by the cathedral.

We visited Senate Square on our first evening in Helsinki and thought the cathedral, government palace and monument in the centre were fabulous. Rather breath-taking to look up at the cathedral in all its splendour! Worth going up the stairs to look inside the cathedral and to look out over the city too.

Large square close to the port. Huge church building with the National Library and city museum close by. Beautiful photo opportunity but you need to go down to the opposite end of the square to really frame the whole building and square (unless you are carrying a dSLR with a good lens). Streets all around full of shopping opportunities. Behind... More

The square was filled with vendors and wonderful food smells! We would have loved to try a little of everything but we were too cold too!
