Its a neo classical square with a magnificient statue of Tsar Alexander II. There are regularl groups of Russian tourists who stand under the statue to be photographed as Lenin ordered all statues of Tsars destroyed. The Finns dont mind A II as he allowed them significant autonomy. If you go up the stairs to the Cathedral you have fine... More

Great place to stop for a picnic on the steps of the cathedral. Great view of the square. You can eat your lunch and watch all the people taking photos of the statue and of the beautiful old buildings in the square. Worth a visit!

Beautiful square with steps to Senate building, which is quite impressive. Government buildings surrounding the square are so pretty. Especially like the statue of Alexander II in the middle of the square. Recommend.

It's quite an ordinary square - of course the surrounding buildings are stylish, but i cannot say that there is anything special to do or see. Apart from sitting in ghe sun on the stone steps of the stairs to the church. But that's it, really.

Much of Helsinki is very drab. Senate Square is a breath of airy lightness. The cathedral in particular lights up the whole place.

The most likely reason you are here is to visit the Lutheran Cathedral. While large and open and surrounded by nice buildings, there are far more impressive squares in Europe. It is not the main attraction unless hosting a pop concert or protest!

Depending on th day you visit, it could be an empty square or a very busy bustling party atmosphere. We visited on May Day, and there were parties going on.

located right in the middle of Helsinki this seems to be local place to sit on the steps and just watch the world go by. With the church above and the city below it is a wonderful place to rest and enjoy the surrounds. Always something happening here.

Very nice view of the beautiful church, very clean square, close to the port, pretty old streets around it... Amazing in the summer to just sit there and enjoy the view of the old part of the city of Helsinki.

Senate Square make up the oldest part of the city. Landmarks and famous buildings surrounding the square are nowadays the main tourist attractions of Helsinki: the Cathedral, the Government Palace, the University and Sederholm House (the oldest building of the city)
