We wandered around Helsinki and kept wandering back to this square. It's such a beautiful square and a wonderful place to take it all in, sit back and relax

This makes for a nice photo stop, but there really isn't much else to do here. There are tons of people walking around and sitting on the steps leading up to the church. If you are on a bus tour and stop for 5 minutes, you'll have more than enough time at this stop.

Senate Square and adjacent Cathedral is very popular with tour buses, and is crowded. It does make a great meeting place, and open area to take great photos from. Stop by as you are walking around town.

How can you not go to Helsinki and not wander through this iconic square?? It's a picture perfect moment or selfie perfect picture! Beautiful busy square to just sit and absorb.

During summer the square is often transformed into an open air venue for varying forms of free entertainment. We were fortunate to see the Central China Ballet perform 3 acts from "The Red Detachment of Women." Somewhere Madame Mao must be pleased so many people the world over have enjoyed her artistic progeny. If you go get there early the... More

Must see and learn it for the sake of knowing Helsinki and Finland. Neat pleasant yet simple modest and not as you are used in Europe.

This is a very large square in the city centre near to the food market, when we visited they were setting up a stage, great spot for people watching. Sit on the steps and watch the world go by!

This is part of the centre of town with a lot of history (given the relative youth of Helsinki as a capital). All of the important functions of early society (law, government, education, and religion) are represented here including the oldest building in the city

This is a large cement square bordered by the Senate building and a University of Helsinki building. The Senate building has many narrow steps going up to the entrance and people sit and relax there (similar to the Spanish Steps in Rome). There are outdoor concerts and such, which are worth attending.
