A friend showed us this square and pointed out the four facets to it - church, state, commerce, and university. I thought that was a nice symbolic representation of the balance of Finnish life and I found it quite beautiful, especially the cathedral.

The view from the top is nice so why not sit and enjoy the view along with the rest of the people doing the same, admiring the scenery.

Senate square is the large square at the foot of the Cathedral. Whilst it is the place to be if you want to start the open-top bus tour, and is five minutes from the station, other than that it doesn't really offer much more than views of the cathedral - you are better off heading south for 5 minutes and... Visit this square it makes a great place for pictures with the magnificent white cathedral, from there you can walk and visit the port nearby and another interesting church. Come here and enjoy the scenery.

This is the iconic Square of Helsinki. The Lutheran Church high above the steps looks down upon the Statue of Alexander II, the University, the Senate Building, and lots of Restaurants and Stores all around. We stood below and looked up at the imposing Church, and then climbed up, and looked down upon the Square. Both views were lovely. Every... More

I don't necessarily see this place being extraordinary as a square. The ordinary yet good facts are: Big, quite, good views from top, pretty close to most attractions downtown. That's it. Not much to talk about..

This is an open air square near to the Lutheran Church. There are a lot of steps. This is a place where a lot of the tour buses stop. There is one monument of Alexander II on a pedestal, with other warrior and angel figures on each of the four sides.

A beautiful central square in the city. It is certainly one of the most picturesque parts of downtown Helsinki.

The cathedral in Senate Square was the only building worth seeing, I would hate to be in Helsinki in the winter. Oh yes, the ride on the vintage tram was worth doing.
