this is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. its not wow, but sometimes there are stalls with people selling local products. the stairs to the cathedral are a nice spot to hang and just people watch.

If you are only visiting Helsinki, then you'll probably love the architecture and the historical feeling of the square. But if you've traveled a bit more, you'll see that it's nice but not really anything special. If you're walking by, stop and take a look, but it isn't necessary to go out of your way to visit.

At some point during your visit to Helsinki you must pass by here. Don't miss it. Central location means that it is easy to walk to from anywhere in the center.

Every time I see this astonishing ice-marble palace and its vast square I wonder where all the people are. Everyone I know who has been there on a busy afternoon or evening tells me I'm mad. They may be right, but as part of the easy and entertaining harbour or ferry wharf stroll it's a highlight.

Built by the Russians in the 19th century, this is Helsinki's main and biggest square. In the middle of it is Czar Alexander statue, and on the east and west side there are two identical neoclassic buildings, one being the Finnish Senate and the other the University. Above it, over the flight of steps is the magnificent Helsinki Cathedral.

Yes, it was totally empty as we visited it in cold autumn evening but I can imagine it functions as the best place to meet in Helsinki. It is really large, with the statue of tzar Alexander II in the middle. The steps leading to the Lutheran Cathedral are simply great.

This is a great meeting place for tourists. It is a central place where many city tours begin. The hop on hop off bus affords a great overview of the city. Certain times of the year activities take place in the square and its only a few blocks from the open market.

If you ask a Finnish person to bring you around their city, this is the first place they will bring you to. At the center of the square is the white Helsinki Cathedral. A tip is don't visit FInland in July. I was there end of June to first week of July and Helsinki is like a ghost town.July, which... More

You go there basically to see the cathedral or jump on a hop-on, hop-off bus.. not much else to see.
