We visited Senate Square on our first evening in Helsinki and thought the cathedral, government palace and monument in the centre were fabulous. Rather breath-taking to look up at the cathedral in all its splendour! Worth going up the stairs to look inside the cathedral and to look out over the city too.

Large square close to the port. Huge church building with the National Library and city museum close by. Beautiful photo opportunity but you need to go down to the opposite end of the square to really frame the whole building and square (unless you are carrying a dSLR with a good lens). Streets all around full of shopping opportunities. Behind... More

The square was filled with vendors and wonderful food smells! We would have loved to try a little of everything but we were too cold too!

Well if you visit Helsinki and you don't go to Senate Square is like visiting Athens and not going to the Acropolis. It is a must see, a must photograph, a "I have been there" moment. It is close to the port and several other monuments. Around it there are good opportunities for quality souvenir and trinket shopping - locally... More

Lovely square,but was spoilt by some food stalls with noisy PA system belting out loud music,but the square itself is lovely.;

Looking up to the Lutheran Cathedral above is pretty amazing. The square is clean and there are some nice benches where you could take a picnic on a nice day.

Not much to do here but definitely worth seeing if you are nearby. There's a couple of souvenir shops adjacent to it - one of which sells a lot of handmade unique items.

Was kind of deserted in March when we went, and from the looks of it, is more simpler place. Nice picture opportunity though. Worth a swing by of course.

Impressive square in the center, that attracs a lot of people. A nice place to stroll along and enjoy the atmosphere. Nearby you can easily find a café, or you can sit on the stairs for a rest.

This is the center between the church, the government and the university, and the buildings seem to lean into the large square. A bit cold in february, probably much more inviting in summer.
