Even if you are not using the Finnish railways you should check out this building. Most tram lines pass the entrance or you can get the metro to Rautatientori. It was completed in 1919 by acclaimed architect Eliel Saarinen. The huge granite structure is an early example of futurism and wouldn't look out of place in the film 'Metropolis'. Either... More

The Helsinki main station is a neat place, clean and easy to figure out for ignorant tourists. We asked for a combined train-bus ticket to Nuuksio National Park, and it took 1,5 minute - and the helpful guy at counter told us (in perfect English) to hurry up - the train departed 3 minutes later. Way to go.

Rather unusual looking train station, but nothing too spectacular unless you're really into architecture. I did find the statues in front of the building pretty imposing and awe-inspiring though. Plenty of quick bites available inside, though the place is really busy so you won't want to stay for long. No need to make a special trip down here, you'll probably... More

In the centre of Helsinki where both trains and buses leave. The front entrance is guarded by two outstanding art deco pillars. Through the doors into the station area itself finds you in a world of busyness. Shops cafes and lots of people. The majesty of the place is overwhelming. Easy access, helpful people, but have some idea of where... More

The building has been designed by Saarinen. it is a symbol of Finnish architecture. It is strict with pink granite. It is not a great building compared to today's spectacular icons in other parts of the world.

If you are coming into Helsinki by air (Finnair bus) or by boat (the bus stops here) you are likely to reach here if you use public transport.Huge station with lots of food stalls. Bus stops on either side of the station (long distance). In front is the main city centre with cafes, shops, offices, plenty of starred and non-starred hotels,... More

I am happy that the main railway station is still in the original use, not as a museum. There is a genuine feeling of travelling and waiting for the dear ones. Feeling thirsty? Try a nice pub, Pullman Bar, which is located upstairs. Beware of pickpockets!

Friendly helpful advice saved us all the worry of finding individual train, bus, tram and ferry charges within Helsinki area. From then on, we just carried our pass, and added value when we wanted to travel outside the zone. Apart from that, it's a very fine building and ideal meeting point.

Despite of all modern influence during last decades this massive building still remains as a monument of the original finnish achitecture from early 20th century. I should strongly recommendent evebybody to take a walk and spend some time in and around this astonishing buildning. And it is free of charge!

The architect of this building is excellent. The outside is impressive, inside nothing special but well worth a visit.
